i’ll bite; as shitty as it is that teams cover for players who have done terrible things, athletes as a whole are pretty much just regular people

A key objective of this study was to compare the offending rates of NFL players to those of the general U.S. population. From 2018 to 2023, the annual arrest rate for NFL players ranged from 1.42% to 2.42%. In contrast, arrest rates for males in the general population aged 20-39 ranged from 11.28% to 19.49% during the same period. NFL players also consistently had lower arrest rates across all major offense categories analyzed (Appendix C).
These figures demonstrate a clear discrepancy between the two groups. The data confirms that NFL players are arrested at significantly lower rates than their general population male counterparts, aligning with previous research suggesting that professional athletes tend to offend less frequently than the public (Blumstein, 1999; Leal, 2016).

Keith Law has more this morning on Ike's tumble down the draft board:
"I haven't seen the video. I have had its contents described to me by a team source who's seen it. I also know there's a second question beyond the video. What I wrote complied with our journalistic standards while also explaining why a player I ranked 5th and expected to be drafted in the top 10 was available at 19."

Teams that were on him near the top of the draft reportedly caught wind of a video on social media in which he says some disqualifying stuff. I haven’t seen it, but I had several folks in draft rooms mention it to me; as Irish fell, they were scrambling to find out why and learned of it. Whether or not the Orioles were aware of it when they took him, I don’t know. He wasn’t expected to fall that far, so it’s plausible they did little-to-no makeup work on him.

hell gate’s breakdown of each mayoral candidate’s pace in various NYRR events. zohran mamdani lags behind the field with a 12:54 min/mi pace in the marathon; brad lander and whitney tilson lead the way at 9:18 and 9:17 respectively (although lander only ran a half)

(1/2) in the words of matt yglesias, one of its chief proponents, it's basically the idea that candidates should center their campaign around what's popular and not fight on the issues where republicans are more popular (in practice to them this means conceding on trans rights and immigration)

"And that is popularism. It is an almost childishly silly thing to argue about. But I believe that it is counterproductive to progressive causes to push candidates in tough races to take high-salience public stances in favor of unpopular progressive causes. Instead, you should encourage candidates to embrace popular progressive causes and allow them to make tactical retreats from fights where conservatives have public opinion on their side."
