🤜🤛 Finally, best of all — you'll get to interact w/ the amazing scientists collaborating on the project including @seismoshuck.bsky.social at LSU, Anne Bécel at LDEO, and Harm Van Avendonk at UTIG and their groups in addition to scientists at SU.

If this all sounds interesting, please reach out!

🌊 You'll use surface waves recorded by the OBS both from ambient noise and active source to constrain the crust and anisotropic fabric of the lithospheric mantle, which holds a record of past asthenospheric flow. Plus, develop new imaging strategies that combine passive and active datasets.

🔎 The main science questions are:

- What process(es) control asthenospheric flow during the opening of a new ocean basin?

- How does early slower spreading differ from later faster spreading?

- How quickly does the chemistry of the mantle source mature beneath a new ridge?

🚢 You'll get to participate in a 43-day cruise on the R/V Marcus G. Langseth in the Northwest Atlantic, where we will collect passive short-period OBS and active-source seismic reflection/refraction data. This will include a 700km long profile consisting of 52 OBS and spanning 50Myr of seafloor.
