My favorite Google Docs trick: using tabs to differentiate tasks and assessments, all in one file. No more asking "Where did I put that?!" 🙌 #TeacherHack #EdTech #Differentiation

Traveled to Hazelhurst, Wisconsin for a quick unplugged getaway. Woke up to a Winter Storm Warning and 6 inches of fresh snow. The perfect stay-inside-and-read-a-book kind of day. #WinterEscape #UpNorthWisconsin

Back at it—officially working on Master’s degree #2. Grateful, motivated, and reminded how much I benefit from taking notes and reading books on paper. #GradSchool #LifelongLearner

"The human brain is built to accommodate multiple codes of communication. As we learn them, doors open to new experiences and knowledge." -- Viorica Marian.

Your multilingual learners are strengthening their amazing brains each day. Celebrate that!

A sweet surprise from a student’s grandma visiting from Spain—turrón de estepa! 🇪🇸✨ Moments like these remind me how food connects us across cultures. Grateful for students who share their traditions!

Portable dry erase boards = instant scaffolding! Whether modeling sentence structure, breaking down vocabulary, or reinforcing key concepts, these boards offer on-the-fly, visual support for MLs. Simple, effective, and always accessible!

Annotating maps = a powerful tool for MLs! 🗺️❄️🔥 Teaching cold → colder → coldest & warm → warmer → warmest becomes more meaningful when students see it in context. Visuals + language = better comprehension!

Students are strengthening their English by writing about objects, properties, and materials. Each takes a turn at the board as we refine their sentences together. It’s incredible to see newcomers expand their vocabulary and express ideas more effectively. ❤️

Hispanic Heritage Month may be over, but these stories matter year-round! Mrs. Leahy made this for our MS, and it’s still up—I love that. Want more great reads? Talk to your librarian! They have the best recs, titles, and funding to bring more voices into our spaces.

This Swivl setup helped me record a week of class to analyze and improve my instruction for ML students. 🎥💡

Reflection = better engagement, pacing & support! Our MLs deserve the best. 🌍📚

Making Vocabulary Stick!

My modified Frayer Model helps multilingual learners connect with new words! 🔍✏️

✔ Student-friendly definitions
✔ Opposites for contrast
✔ Sketches for visuals
✔ Translations for support 🌍

This strategy bridges language gaps and sparks real-world connections! 💡💬

🌍✨ This week, my students learned science words—objects, materials, and properties—using realia! 🏠🔬 Hands-on materials made vocabulary real, helping them describe textures like soft, hard, cold, transparent.

The best part? It sparked real-world connections to what they see at home!

A powerful reminder that teachers believe in their students and see their potential, even when they don’t see it in themselves. Education matters—it shifts perspectives, breaks generational cycles, and opens doors to new possibilities. ✨ #Educated #TaraWestover #TeachersMatter #BreakingBarriers

If Victoria Marian doesn't convince you that multilingualism is a superpower, nothing will. Parents, encourage your kids to study additional languages. It will benefit them and countless ways for years to come.

While practicing listening for the middle sound, the word was "vote." Out of nowhere, a student who rarely speaks in full sentences in English said:
💬 "I confuse vote, boat, boot."
Oh. My. Gosh. What a funny derailment! 😂 What a perfect lesson in phonics—totally unplanned, but so meaningful! 🥹

Every two weeks, my students engage with the NY Times "What's Going on in This Picture?" activity. We analyze the image as a class, students post comments, and I later use their responses for an editing session, maintaining authenticity. It's impactful! https://vist.ly/3mrubxe

If any of you are using Vistas Get Ready!, I created a template for Unit 2, "Connect to Social Studies." Sometimes those sections of the units are light w/resources. Feel free to borrow mine! :-)

The best part about making traditional German dishes is that most of the ingredients are already in your kitchen (at least in Wisconsin)! Tonight, I gave it a shot and made Schnitzel mit Jägersauce, Kartoffelpüree, and Gurkensalat.

One of my New Year's resolutions is to share a new strategy for teaching ML learners nearly every day. I've got some catching up to do! @LarryFerlazzo inspired me to purchase this velco board. Integrating game-based learning works! Examples to follow. https://vist.ly/3mrqq6y

Every couple of years I reread "The Third Teacher." It offers such a great reminder of how space influences learning. While we can't take a wrecking ball to schools, we can be advocates of redesign & rethink already existing spaces. @thethirdteacher #thirdteacher #schooldesign

As someone who has made a career in being an educational technology advocate, this book offers a moment for me to pause and think. I would sincerely encourage all of you to read this and discuss.
