Always trying to improve whatever I do.
Truly humbled by the extraordinary talent and intellect of the NIH scientists and grateful for the science/biomedical research funded by NIH that has given so many a second chance in life.
On this day, 8 years ago, I received a diagnosis of breast cancer. My 65 yo mother died of the same disease when I was 31 so this was terrifying news. NIH/NCI sponsored research developed a new targeted immunotherapy for HER2Neu+ disease to add to adjuvant therapy. This therapy saved my life. ❤️NIH

Sóla had to have a bath this AM after her walk. Complaints were pouring in from house guests and visitors alike about her latest eau de parfum: Dead Squirrel. She does not mind the shower and loves towel drying but wearing the robe is a bridge too far. She tried/failed to shake it off.

Sóla’s Sunday AM walk: 35/81%/6MPH S. Dogs:16; Runners:5. Cold and gray today. Added to yesterday’s ~8 mile walk were 3.5 miles walked today. Always interesting to switch the normal walk to look for changes on our streets. We saw two new demolition notices. The hawk likes our street. #Dogsofbluesky

One other observation from our trip to DC yesterday: we looked for the National Guard and saw none until we entered the least used metro stop (for Saturday) closest to the Nat Gallery of Art. There we found them standing on a platform. Surely they would have preferred to be home for the holidays.

Beautiful day in DC today. Not one to take in the sights at the height of the season, we enjoyed a relatively “tourist free” experience. The people we saw were mostly locals. The Natural History Museum though, it was and will always be crowded.

Highly recommend a visit if you are in the DMV or Washington, DC: The Stars We Do Not See. Our trip to DC included two visits: this art exhibit and a visit to see a dinosaur fossil at the Museum of Natural History. The fossil was mobbed with people. This art is my fav of the two.

All the Stars we cannot see, Aboriginal art exhibition, East Wing, National Gallery of Art. Just beautiful - bring a camera. Note: my SIL, an Irish/Oz citizen, gave me an aboriginal painting once to go with a boomerang decorated with aboriginal art. I love this exhibition and this art.

Sóla’s Saturday AM walk: 36F/80%/8MPH NNE. Dogs:14; Runners:2; Ravens:1. Today’s discussion: the return of plants/wildlife on French mountains as 100+ ski slopes permanently close due to low snowfall. “Piste Noir” on MHZ addresses the impact to the community. Is the raven living here? #Dogsofbluesky

Sóla’s Friday AM walk: 33/55%/6MPH ESE. Dogs:15; Runners: 2; Cyclists:6. We walked ~4 miles today and through some interesting areas of the extended neighborhood. The Arylawn Dairy farm, or what is left of it, is nearby and is a favorite to visit with dogs. We saw new houses too. #Dogsofbluesky

Another one bites the dust. Took Sóla <15 minutes to chew open a hole in her Christmas toy, then destuff the squirrel and extract the squeaker. All of her concentration is focused on the squeaker. She quickly loses interest in the toy once the squeaker has been removed. #Dogsofbluesky

Sóla’s Thursday AM walk: 36/86%/6 MPH WSW. Dogs:4. Sóla needed a little bit of encouragement to get up for her walk today. The rain didn’t come and we had a nice walk. Great Christmas with our daughter and DIL. Thinking of our friends going through stuff, you are not alone, sending ❤️. #Dogsofbluesky

Sóla says Merry Christmas folks!

Third and last cake of this holiday season: “The Best Chocolate Cake you have ever eaten.” M and Catherine rang ~13:00 while out shopping and said, “Hey, how is the cake coming along?” Traffic was very bad and parking worse at the bakery. I said, I’ll bake a cake, don’t worry & it will be good.

Sóla’s Wednesday AM walk: 44/69%/12MPH NNW. Dogs:12; Deer:2. We met Charley, ~2yo blind rescue/mix from GA with her mom, her seeing eye person. Charley lost her vision to Aspergillosis, a fungal infection that spread to both eyes. When euthanasia was suggested, the mom said no. #Dogsofbluesky

Sóla’s Tuesday AM walk: 36/79%/8MPH S. Dogs:5; Deer:3. The Christmas lights are today’s story, along with a wet dog who tracked mud into my recently mopped kitchen floor. Can’t keep anything clean for long with a border collie. Dog hair, don’t care. #Dogsofbluesky

We also climbed the volcano that was erupting in Iceland in 2023 near Grendavik. But it was the one much further away than the current active one. Hope to get back to Iceland soon. M is a volcano man.

Add Mt Vesuvius to the list of volcanoes we have climbed. You would not imagine it to be so hard with a wide gravel path but it is steep, the gravel is loose and it is really hot. Ascent and descent are equally difficult. People can easily get hurt on this climb. One slip is all it takes.

Cardiologist: why are you here?
Me: my primary care referred me.
Cardiologist: have you noticed a change in your health over the past 6 months.
Me: well, I can’t climb volcanoes the way I used to.
Cardiologist: do you usually climb volcanoes?
Me: I’ve climbed a few: Stromboli, Etna and in Iceland.

Two excavators hard at work digging the foundation for a new home in an older neighborhood. Could watch this for hours. One time an operator allowed me to sit in the cab and operate the claw- he said I was the second “old lady” to whom he had given the opportunity. I missed my professional calling.

Sóla’s Monday AM walk: 26/69%/2 MPH NW. Dogs:9; Cyclists:2. Saw the barred own leave its perch - it has been calling. Cold walk but were warmly met by two dog walkers w/Sóla’s good friends. Saw 2 excavators digging in tandem: 1 breaking rocks; 1 dumping rocks/earth in the trucks. #Dogsofbluesky

Trip through the neighborhood woods on the winter solstice and the fungi found there. Not a mycologist so unable to identify these specimens. Can say the woods and tree on which they are growing are primarily tulip poplars. @lukelukeluke.bsky.social what are these?
December 21, 2025 at 2:31 PM
Sóla’s Sunday AM walk: 38/58%/7 MPH W. Dogs:11; Runners:2. Had a beautiful sunrise; took a side trip through the woods; looked for fungi and met Milo, Sóla’s King Charles Spaniel friend. Today is for wrapping pressies; going to a glass party and for making chili. #Dogsofbluesky

Cake No. 2: Coconut. Make one each year at Christmas. It is a really nice cake if you like coconut. This year, we also made Coquito, carrying on the coconut theme. It is a very good batch too.
