I wondered when the rocket launch countdown (10, 9, 8...) first entered into popular culture. Apparently it was all the way back in 1929, in Fritz Lang's "Frau im Mond". Amazing seeing everything we associate with 60s moonshots imagined depicted back in the 20s. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFGA...

I have been messing with Gemini Deep Research today and it is banana times. You prompt it with a research task, it replies with an outline of a research plan. Then it finds and analyzes dozens of web sites, papers, news articles, and videos. Then generates a paper with citations on that topic.

Republican Governor Larry Hogan posted video of the constellation Orion and claimed the stars were “large drones” above his home.

Just a reminder that Republicans want to shut down the Department of Education.

everything is terrible, but in the past 12 months:
* first net energy production from a fusion reaction
* quantum computing outpaces supercomputers
* AI starting to become ubiquitous and AGI feels more just-around-the-corner than ever
* and now room temperature superconductors may be a thing?

this work is staggering, we now have a way of measuring distortions in spacetime (gravitational waves) from some of the most massive objects in existence and from the very early years of the universe - https://www.space.com/gravitational-wave-background-universe-1st-detection
The gravitational wave background of the universe has been heard for the 1st time
In a historic first, astronomers have detected low-frequency gravitational waves using a galaxy-sized antenna of millisecond pulsars in the Milky Way.

I need to buy a microwave because I just read how a microwave with rust spots can be dangerous. this would have been good to know about two years ago.

anyway, I've learned that you can get a microwave that... looks cool? isn't just a black and chrome box? when did that start?

So... anything happening in the ocean lately? Any aquatic events I should be aware of? Seems an age since I've heard anything about the sea or things that may be under it.
