Did Jesus say peace to this house when he entered? Did that peace rest on anyone in the house or return to Jesus? Did Jesus create this conflict? If he did, are there times when we should also steer towards confrontation?

When a scribe says that Jesus has insulted them as well Jesus proceeds to be more direct in his critique of the scribes. What began with one amazed pharisee ends with the scribes and pharisees "lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say" (11:54).

In that house a single pharisee's amazement at Jesus's failure to wash his hands erupts into a conflict that becomes increasingly heated and includes an expanding number of people. It begins with a single pharisee and becomes "you pharisees."
