Avi Loeb is a great example of a smart scientist who took a subtle but hard turn toward sensationalism - subtle in that he cites (outdated/inaccurate) data to support his claims - but so clearly finds data to support his hypotheses rather than letting the data lead.

A few months ago Kennedy said he was going to look at vaccines and autism. Clearly he found nothing so now he's onto Tylenol. What will he blame in 6 months when that research is confirmed and replicated?

If I were the Secretary of Health and Human Services I would probably defer to the decades of empirical, peer-reviewed research in planning policy rather than some boneheaded takes I heard on Joe Rogan or whatever

I really don't understand how this stuff slips through the cracks. I review 1-2 papers a month generally, and even though it's kind of a chore (I reject review requests for papers I have little interest in), I still put good effort into the review process. www.theguardian.com/science/2025...
