I was lucky to catch this view from my window seat minutes before sunset near the border of Arizona and New Mexico.

The shot features neither the sun nor the region’s famous desertscapes. Sometimes a photo works because of what you leave out, not what you include. #getoutside

I didn’t expect to see the northern lights from South Texas, but with a little enhancement and a 20-ish-second exposure on my iPhone, last night surprised me. Might try again tonight if effects from the recent CME continue. #astrophotography #naturephotography

Legend says that Badwater Basin earned its name when a surveyor’s mule refused to drink from it. The expanse isn’t poisoned, but it is salty: almost 200 sq mi of salt deposits. I angled this shot low show its translucency. Death Valley NP 2023. #nationalparks #naturephotography #getoutside

The Belt of Venus is visible when the Earth’s shadow darkens a sliver of the atmosphere. Captured this shot with my iPhone; I was lucky enough to have a window seat on the correct side of an airplane. Sometimes good shots are opportunity and observation, or “luck+look”. #naturephotography #iphone

Building on past lessons I’ve given outdoors, on Nov. 17 I’ll teach an indoor lesson on smartphone photography at Fieldwork in Atascadero, CA. We’ll look at settings, focus, exposure, lighting, and composition with phone cameras. RSVP and learn more at www.fieldworkart.org #smartphonephotography

Pelican feather at Pismo Beach, summer of 2021. While learning to photograph the beach I realized that sunsets aren’t always about the sun. #sunset #naturephotography #getoutside

Tomorrow night I’ll talk about ten local hiking trails like the MDO bluffs, Bishop Peak, and Pismo Preserve. You’ll learn from my maps, photos, and experience leading group hikes since 2021. #hiking #sanluisobipso

Today’s cool, overcast weather reminds me of a hike I did near Les Contamines-Montjoie, France, last year. I soon learned to appreciate waterproofing my gear & clothes in the Alps.

Like design, photography involves making decisions. In this case I chose what to include — and exclude — to show waning light atop a morro in San Luis Obispo, CA. Later I wrote a booklet on similar techniques: www.joephotos.art/2025/08/how-... #smartphonephotography

A few more from my morning photo walk today: The sky glows with first light before the morros awaken; a sun dog overlooks Edna Valley vineyards; Cerro San Luis catches the first rays of sun. #landscapephotography #sunrisephotography #naturephotography #sanluisobispo

Fog rolled through the valleys at sunrise south of San Luis Obispo, CA. I was hoping for shadows on the nearby hills, but these in the distance were stronger. The fog was an unexpected bonus. #landscapephotography

This morning I went to an ocean overlook and caught fog drifting over the waves. It kept drifting in until I couldn’t see anything.

Sometimes that makes for atmospheric photos, other times not so much. The attempt is worth the risk. #getoutside

I was planning to compare JPG, HEIF, and RAW image formats … but there's a wide range of possibilities even among RAW pics from different apps and devices. This warrants a closer look.

I’m playing with !Camera app by Not Boring. The app captured details across highlights and shadows in this courtyard of Castel Sant’Angelo, Rome, even without the app’s additional HDR feature.

I'm exploring the practical side of the Dolomites: the towns, public transport, best times of year to visit, etc. But once in a while I get more than a snapshot. #dolomites #naturephotography #iphone17pro

Yesterday I hiked near Spoleto, Italy, and the Ponte delle Torri aqueduct (now a pedestrian bridge). The adjacent fortress Rocca Albornoziana dates back to the 1360s CE. Jet lag plagues me during this trip to Italy, but I’m enjoying both my time and the views. #travelphotography #getoutside

Just a quick pic looking towards Morro Rock, California, taken during yesterday's hazy evening. Low tide brings the bay's character to the surface. #landscapephotography

Recently I published a booklet on smartphone lunar photography. During this harvest moon I followed my own advice to get this pic, a handheld shot with my iPhone 17 Pro. Learn more: joephotos.gumroad.com/l/lunar-smar...

Autumn is a good season for sunset skies near Pismo Beach, CA. I was lucky to catch this on an evening hike — another time I’m glad to not stay home.

Also trying out my iPhone 17 Pro. Pretty good resolution: at 300DPI the pano could print 42” wide. #getoutdoors #photography #nature #sunset

I’ve added light and landscape to my collection: Stark sand dunes, jellyfish clouds, Badwater Basin, and a panorama of sunset over low-lying clouds. Bring the outdoors into your space with museum-quality prints. #LandscapePhotography #NatureArt #WallArt #PrintsForSale

Is a vigorous hike worth chancing a glimpse above the clouds? Four years ago today, it was. Marine layers can occur at this time of year, but it’s hard to tell how thick they are until you’ve climbed above them. What an evening at Pismo Preserve, California. #photography #landscape #nature #sunset

I went out for some long-exposure shots of night sky at Minaret Summit, near Mammoth Lakes, CA. But clouds drifted in and it seemed my chance was ruined. Still I wondered … what if? Abandoning my plan I captured some mixed shots of both stars and moonlit clouds. #photography #nature #staycurious
