unenviable. Its key ally - the US - is unpredictable; its new "frenemy" - the EU - is a tough, complex negotiating partner that is fighting its own demons; and domestic pressures limit Labour's manoevering space, or at least its key players seem to think so. Could boldness be the best (only) option?

Indeed. A weak and uninspiring attempt to discredit one of the few Labour politicians who may actually come up with an idea or two for the UK's economy. Depressing.

The same applies to the next message - tough deterrence (Russian incursions into NATO airspace should be "shot down"; use of Russian frozen assets against Russia may be a matter for Belgium but "should be possible").

Then a strong dose of moral clarity (Putin "not a good guy" nor "a rational one"), which should appeal to conservative, security-conscious voters - like the Tory mainstream and Reform-curious.

First, defence of past views (Putin an "admirably effective political operator", while NATO and EU eastward expansation partially responsible for the war). No doubling down here but sticking to his guns will appeal to the traditional Farage/UKIP populist national right.
