This may be closer to you and VA doesn't seem to have a state market. State farmers' usually are the places that supply grocery stores, local markets, and prices are a lot lower.

For gardening, put in herbs to use with the supplies. Since herbs are actually weeds that someone found tasty, they take little care. If you know a hunter who would be willing to spare you some meat, even that can be canned with success.

If you want to learn to can, I can teach you. If you have a state farmer's market, buying in quantity is much cheaper than the roadside markets.
