Then Alice swipes to a file that looks like the digital version of a fancy invitation, probably printed on cream card stock with a beautiful looping print that says: You are cordially invited to the annual Asclepius Investor’s Gala, with a date, time, and address to Asclepius Tower underneath. Alice looks up at us and smirks. “And,” she says, “all three of them have been on the Gala guest list for the past five years. At least one of them has always shown up to this thing, too. I checked. If we have any chance of finding enough data to take down STRIKE, this is it.” We all look at each other, our faces illuminated by the soft, warm electric lantern light nearby and the harsh white light of Alice’s tablet screen. The difference cuts shadows and divots across our features. “Alice,” I say, pointing to the date on the invitation, “this is next Friday. That’s less than two weeks away.” “I know.” “The Investor’s Gala,” Jack says, meeting her gaze across the circle. “You’re not serious.” “At least one of them will be there, Jack. Probably all three, considering the mess we’ve been making of Asclepius’s shit.” “How exactly are we supposed to infiltrate the company’s fanciest and most exclusive event without immediately getting grabbed and thrown in cages?” he asks. “It’s not like you and I have an in, anymore.”

Agent Ramirez smirks and pulls another badge out of the same pocket, this one a proper FBI badge. I take it and examine it too. “We’re all double-registered with a more obvious organization to avoid those kinds of questions,” he replies as I examine the badge. It looks just like the ones I’ve seen on TV, but I doubt that’s a good metric of authenticity. I hand it back quickly. “We’re only allowed to show our actual official badge to supers and other approved government personnel, and we rarely carry the real badge on us anyway. Just in case.” “Hm.” I keep glaring at him and shove my gloved hands into my pockets to warm them up a little. “How do you usually find rogue supers, then?” “We have a few different methods.” “Oh yeah, real ominous and vague answer. Very helpful.” Agent Ramirez does actually crack a smile at my sarcasm, which surprises me. “Alright,” he says, leaning back against the bench, “fair. We monitor a lot of social media posts and conspiracy sites. Watch for strange news stories. Get help from other supers with applicable powers. Keep our eyes out for any strange disturbances that happen in homes with kids between ages eight and twelve.” His eyes flit back to my face. “That last one is the type I usually get sent out on, if it helps.”

When I wake up, the first thing I notice is the cold. It’s not freezing, but it’s just on the wrong side of chilly. Probably helped along by the cold metal encircling my neck. A collar? Why am I wearing a collar? Goosebumps rise on my bare arms, and I suddenly realize I’m not wearing the same clothes I was wearing before they knocked me out. They put me into these white, plain, thin-as-shit scrub things. My sports bra and underwear are the same though, which is… some comfort.  “Ugh,” I groan, sitting up. I’m lying on an uncomfortable bed in a plain, white cell. Three of the walls are made of white cinder blocks, and the wall in front of me is a door of white painted metal bars. There’s a typical, stainless steel prison toilet in the corner, a camera up near the ceiling, and absolutely nothing else in the cell besides the wall bed and myself.  When I look through the bars of my cell door, I notice another cell across from me with someone inside. It’s a little black girl, four or five years old, gripping the bars in her baby-fat hands and staring at me from behind a pair of round, white-rimmed glasses.  Lavender. I recognize her immediately from the photo on Jack’s bedside table. Jack’s baby half-sister.  We stare at each other for a moment, and then she blinks and turns towards my right. “She’s awake!” she whispers.

With the adrenaline filling my veins, busting my way off the dissection table is almost comically easy. With my telekinesis, I immediately unlatch the Velcro straps holding me down and shove everything and everyone as far away from me as possible. I scream too, even though I don’t have to for my powers. Or maybe I do. When I did karate briefly, my punches and kicks were always stronger when I exclaimed at the hit. Maybe the concept is similar with superpowers. It doesn’t matter. The guards and scientist all yell in surprise and then hit the walls with heavy, bone-snapping thuds. The scientist and second guard slump to the ground, unconscious, as I bolt upright and leap off the table towards the door. The first guard groans and slides down the wall, but he grips his side in pain and barely gets himself back to standing before I’m already gone from the room.  Did I kill them? The second guard and the scientist? I don’t know, and shame fills me as I realize I don’t care. You’re a murderer, I think. A monster. Good thing that’s what my brother and the kids down here need.

Naturally, everything goes to complete and utter shit less than an hour later.  It happens while Jack and Tommy are still out shopping, when Alice is showing Sara how to use her tablet and I’ve got a notebook out to show Lavender how to spell a few big kid words. Nico, who fully just stole Jack’s book earlier, is reading it on the bed next to Sara and Alice. I’m in the middle of writing the word “beautiful” when I hear it.  Our hotel room window faces an alleyway—it’s why we’ve been able to climb up the fire escape without anyone really noticing or caring—but it’s still close enough to the street for us to hear cars. Which is, importantly, what I hear. Three cars, all pulling up to the curb, car doors opening and closing as people climb out.  It’s too coordinated to be three random hotel guests. When I look up at Alice, she’s staring right at me, probably thinking the exact same thing.  “What?” Lav asks as I put the pencil down and get up off the bed. “What is it?” “Shh,” I tell her, walking over to the window. I peer through it, down into the alleyway, and spy two men wearing ill-fitting suits and wired earpieces walking into view from the street. Definitely Asclepius security goons. Shit. “Guys, time to go. Asclepius is here.”  “What?” Sara asks, and though she keeps her voice down, the panic in it is obvious. “How’d they find us?”

I realize what she’s about to do—manipulate my emotions to convince me to stay. She has to touch me to do it.  Panic and fury and insult well up inside me.  She’s going to manipulate me? Screw her.  I snarl and whip around, letting go of Tommy’s hand to grab her wrist, and without even thinking, I dull the swirling stardust of her power until it can no longer be used. It happens without any conscious thought on my end, just a pure, unadulterated reaction to someone trying to manipulate my emotions. I had enough of that growing up without superpowers helping it along. I won’t have it happen to me again.  She gasps and yanks her hand away, out of my grip, and for a moment the two of us stand there in the hospital hallway, staring at each other. I curl my hands into fists and they shake at my sides, ready to punch, kick, fight my way out if I have to. The woman’s eyes are wide behind her glasses, and she looks… devastated.  In a flash, I realize what I’ve done. Instinctually, I know what I did was a dampening effect, not a total cut-off from her powers—could I even do that? How did I even do what I just did?—but she doesn’t know that. To her, I just took away the one thing that made her special. Her power.  I’ll let her know it isn’t permanent, but first, she should know a thing or two about me.

“Not this time,” Alice says firmly. “I finally convinced Jack to use his mind control on the chaperones today because we knew we wanted to meet you.”  I blink at Alice, and then I turn to Jack in surprise. “You don’t like using your powers?” I ask. He shakes his head again. “It’s invasive,” he says. “And messed up.” “Useful,” Alice says. “Shut up, dude, you’re basically a fire bender. I’m like if Professor X actually cared about people’s mental privacy.”  I stare at him for a long moment, and then a hysterical laugh bubbles out of me before I can stop it. I immediately try to stifle it to no avail. Jack and Alice look at me, confused, and I suck in a breath and tell myself to get it under control.  “Sorry, just…” I shake my head and let out another small laugh. “God, sorry, I thought I was the only one who thought Professor X was the absolute worst. Like, freezing all those people in place? That’s terrifying! And I first watched those movies when I was eight!”  “Yes!” Jack says, and then gestures at me emphatically while looking at Alice. “See?” Alice rolls her eyes. “All’s fair in love and war, Jackie boy,” she says.  “And I’m allowed to be deeply uncomfortable every time I use my powers, Allie girl.” “Do not fucking call me that.”

“You had years to plan that rescue, Alice,” I tell her. “Four years and special access through your parents and a stable source of food and warmth on top of it. We don’t have any of that anymore. We have to focus on surviving right now.”  “That’s all we’ve been doing since we ran away, though!” Tommy said. “I’m tired of just surviving, Pen! I want to take them down!” “Well, tough shit!”  “Pen,” Jack says quietly, and the three of us immediately fall silent at the solemn tone of his voice. When I meet his gaze, his eyes are sad but determined, with a serious steadiness that’s as hard as steel.  “They’re right,” he says. “We can’t run. Asclepius and STRIKE will chase us forever, and I’m not letting my baby sister grow up hunted and scared. You and Tommy weren’t being chased by anyone but the cops before this. It was different. But now we’ve got my uncle and his entire company on our heels, and if we don’t turn around and fight back, we may never have another shot at taking them down.”  My stomach twists in anger and panic as I realize I’m on the losing side of this argument. I feel my hands begin to shake, and I curl them into fists to hide it.  “You don’t know what that’s going to take,” I say, and there’s a tremor in my voice I can’t hide. Angry tears begin to prickle in my eyes. “You have no idea what we’ll have to do, Jack. You have no clue.” “And you do?”

“Pen!”  Tommy’s voice fills me with so much relief I stumble and nearly fall on my face onto the concrete. He doesn’t help by running up and slamming into me with a hug that actually does knock me on my ass. Still, I hug him back. Tightly.  “No one followed you?” I ask. He shakes his head. You can’t ever be sure, but Tommy and I have gotten pretty good at noticing when we’re being followed. Most people aren’t very subtle about it. “Tommy, the video—” “It got uploaded,” he says, eyes wide and frightened, and my stomach drops down so far it might as well be in the East River. “Not the last bit where I used my powers, but—Oh god, Pen, what if, what if STRIKE finds us, what if—” “They won’t,” I say firmly, and though my heart is racing and every inch of me feels like it’s frozen and on fire at the same time, I keep my head on. I always keep my head on. “We’ll leave tonight, okay? We’ll go somewhere else. Chicago, maybe, or San Francisco. I don’t know.” “But, but mom said—”

“I just…” Alice sighs, finally blinking the tears out of her eyes. They drip down her cheeks as she stares up at the dark ceiling. “I thought I could handle this. I was so stupid to think I could handle this. I’m not a badass action figure superhero. I’m a spoiled rich girl with martial arts training and a genius IQ and parents that aren’t terrible enough for me to actually hate. Or, not terrible enough to me, at least. They’re plenty terrible to other kids, but not me. Never me.” I let that all sink in, my heart aching. And then I say, dumbly, “You’re not stupid. And you seem pretty badass to me, dude.” Alice shrugs. “A superpower does not a superhero make.” “No, it doesn’t,” I agree. “You know what does? Helping people who can’t help themselves. Saving little kids from evil labs. Using all that spoiled rich girl martial arts training genius IQ evil scientist parent bullshit to help others. And that’s what you do. That’s what you did. That’s what you’ve done every second since I’ve known you. And probably what you’ve done every second of every day that you were able to. Am I wrong?” Her mouth twists into a conflicted, stubborn shape, obviously trying not to believe me, but the furrow in her brows and the look in her eyes tells me she’s starting to.
