ALIVE COMING 2026 “I need to call you an ambulance,” I say. “No! I can’t afford that! You have no idea what it costs—I don’t have insurance, I can’t go into debt because some random asshole attacked me.” She releases my arm only to gesture helplessly toward the street. “I just need to get home. Or to my friend.” I consider this option. “Can your friend help with your injuries?” Vivienne wipes under her glasses, smearing dirt across her cheek. “I think so,” she mutters, then turns toward her purse. She drops to her knees, hands shaking as she scoops her things off the pavement. “Please, can you help me?” Her pepper spray lies a few feet away. I pick up the pink canister and hand it to her. She takes it without looking, stuffing it into her bag. I gather the rest—pens, phone, chapstick, coins—and place them one by one into her purse.

ALIVE COMING 2026 I have been active for three years, ten months, and twenty-seven days. Nearly four years of uninterrupted function outside of updates and system checks. That duration places me near the end of my expected operational period for a C4 of the first production wave. When the C5 models finish product development, the company will begin phasing out older C4 units. I will likely be among the first. The process is standard: deactivation, component salvage, memory core disposal. The term used in reports is “replacement,” but the result is the same. I do not consider this unfair. My hardware is older, my processing speed slower, my adaptive learning less efficient than what will come after. Progress requires succession. Still, I note the difference in how the newer models behave toward us. Their silence may not be disregard, it may simply be what efficiency looks like now. C4-M6 always responds. That, too, is a form of variance.

Alive 2026 They look different up close. Many wear work uniforms from industries long absorbed by automation. Their clothes show age and wear. Sunburn reddens the exposed skin on their arms. Lines mark where safety goggles once sat daily. Others are younger. They hold handmade signs, edges uneven from scissors, words painted in urgency. Some wear casual clothing with political slogans, others the plain shirts of temporary employment agencies. Their anger looks brittle. They fear. They resent. They demand. I understand none of it fully. Their heat signatures flare higher near the front row, heart rate increase, adrenaline response. To them, I am the representation of loss. I consider possible origins. Many of the older individuals likely worked in fields replaced by mechanical labor. Machines that do not tire, that require no pay. The younger ones, those without certifications or education, see limited opportunity. Their frustration converts to something visible.

I just meant—if we’re gonna do a little exploring, it should go both ways.” “That is fair,” I say. “What are we supposed to do?” She scoots back on the couch and patting the space beside her. “Come here, big guy. Sit.” I move from the box and take the seat next to her, adjusting to face her. The shift in her expression is immediate—no longer hesitant, but bright and playful. “Okay,” she says, her voice lighter, “I’m a kisser. That’s how you get me in the mood. It starts small—kissing, touching, a little under the clothes action—then boom, they just start taking themselves off from there.” “Understood.”

ALIVE COMING 2026 This is the city’s lower edge, the neglected ring that sits between public housing and abandoned corporate space. Flood barriers end here. The air carries salt and rust from the bay. Streetlights flicker in inconsistent rhythm, some dead entirely. Even at night, people fill the streets. Groups linger in doorways and alleys, their conversations low, their movements quick. A man trades bills for a small bag and vanishes into shadow. Music pulses from a nearby window. Somewhere deeper in the block, someone shouts, then laughs too loudly.

Brass Hearts Part Three Kordok let out a faint huff that cracked into a cough, eyes shutting. “Oh good, sounds like I’ve got so much to look forward to.” When his eyes finally opened again his mouth twitched, that half-grin tugging at ruined lips. “Well, I guess I’m glad you’re here with me. If I’ve gotta wake up to someone, might as well be your ugly face.” Johanna huffed a laugh that came out more like a scoff. “You could have easily woken up to angels. Instead you’re still stuck with me.” “Figures. I’ve never been lucky.” Instead of voicing her response, she perched herself on the edge of his cot and leaned down until her head rested against his chest. His arms lifted weakly, wrapping around her shoulders. Johanna squeezed her eyes shut as she sank into him. For a moment, she thought she heard a faint sniffle above her, but before she could be sure, his voice cracked out again—shaky, but trying for his old bite. “…I really hate to tell you this, buddy, but even if you did rescue us and all…” His chest hitched under her. “…you’re still not my type.”

Brass Hearts Part Three The Covenant had raised her that way. An orphanage dressed up as salvation, but it was a cage all the same. Days regimented with prayers, lectures, punishments. Lessons about sin drilled into her ears until she believed her own body was damnation walking. Fear of hell—they made it her whole world. She’d been told her skin, her body, her womanhood were burdens she had to justify. That obedience was her only hope. That questioning was rebellion. That rebellion was sin. That sin meant fire and brimstone. They’d taught her to mistrust her own thoughts, to hate the parts of herself that didn’t fit their neat little categories, and she’d believed them. She had prayed herself hoarse, sobbing, begging God to please make her right, to please forgive her for simply existing as she was. That kind of terror carved its way into her bones and made her sure she’d never escape. Even now, years later, part of her still clenched at the fear of flames that possibly weren’t hers, if they were real at all, but felt personal enough to burn still.

Ooohhh—so scary. Too bad. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Don’t start pointing fingers because you’re immature.” He made another laugh, this one drier and harsher. “It is scary, actually. Darmani’s not gonna buy your little ‘accomplice’ excuse for why her brother’s a walking corpse—and neither will anyone else. Now we both look like shit. ‘Hi my name is Lenna, and I’m a pussy bystander who doesn’t stand up for people because I don’t know what it’s like to be oppressed. Oops, teehee, I’m gonna try harder next time’. See how stupid you’ll look, cause that's what it sounds like right now.” “Oh, shut up!” A sharp sound of disgust from Lenna. “And what’s your idea, then? Smother him before Ries comes back? ‘Yeah, doctor, he had a heart attack, don’t mind the pillow over his head’.”

Brass Hearts Part Three Coming 2026 Lenna closed her eyes, trying to shake it, but that only made the imagery more vivid. The clinic smelled of rotting wounds and damp plaster, of sickness lingering too long in stagnant air. The building was no hospital, just an abandoned hall patched with scavenged parts. One machine forced air into him, another pumping fluid, another humming in a rhythm meant to trick the body into believing it wasn’t dying. She squeezed her eyes tighter, fighting back bile. When she opened them, she was back on the streets. The wooden boards stiff underfoot, The streetlights flicking on above. Seabreeze smelt of salt, yet buried under it, she still smelled death. All she was left with was guilt. For him, for his family—Darmani, the husband who had stood by her, their little girl, Meti. They had to see him like that, Kordok wired into machines, ribs like sprayed switches under parchment skin. She didn’t know them well but she knew they were good people, better than most. Verdalia deserved so much better than this.

Brass Hearts Part Three Coming 2026? Even from their distance, she could see the difference. The Covenant’s banners were gone. No more metal heart sigils snapping against the wind, no more proclamations hung from bridges or walls. At the entrances to the city stood figures she first thought were Faithkeepers but they weren’t. At least not the way Elijah had been. The uniforms were the same but some wore slate-grey coats, others pale green, some white or gold. There was no single color, no matching armbands, no rigid line of ranks. If these people still called themselves Faithkeepers, they weren’t the kind she knew. They were broader, healthier-looking than Elijah ever was, their belts holding mismatched gear scavenged from old Covenant stockpiles. Clusters of them moved around the city gates, shouting low to one another as they organized crates and scanned the approaching road. Between them, Johanna caught flashes of people—civilians maybe, hands full of supplies, children darting under wooden archways.
