I brought you a gift, I didn't wrap it because you can not hold it in your hands, but you will be able to feel it. I will be accused of poor gift-giving etiquette since the gift I am giving you has always been yours, but maybe you didn't know that she was. Perhaps to you she might be he or them or we, I am giving you America, because maybe, like me, you think America belongs to just a select few people. She does not. She belongs to the huddled masses and the wretched. I am giving you America because I did not nurture her when I should have. I did not pay attention to how sick she had become. Malnourished, depressed, suicidal. I did not notice her pain each time a freedom was taken. Her heart is freedom and she has slowly been losing slivers of her soul. I have heard her mumbling to herself, she didn't feel that she deserved a birthday party this year. She has been having intrusive thoughts that war against her beliefs. She has been violent lately. I am giving you America because you can speak to her and tell her she is beautiful. Your words can heal her wounds, comfort the bruises left by the Men who abused her. We don't need to make America great again. She has always been great, because she is not a nation. She is you. She is me. United we are great, divided we are not. I need you to raise a lamp to the words at her feet. Because I am tired and I yearn to breathe free. The media and propaganda would tell you that you are the blood of America, and she does bleed. but you are her nerves. So when she stumbles and falls down, let her know where it hurts. Speak out when she is injured by violence. Temper your outrage with love and compassion. America needs your love, our love. I do not want to stand in front of a headstone that is etched with the words. Here lies America the beautiful. I am tired of reading epitaphs. If we are going to pursue happiness you will have to use your words. Use your voice. Your voice has weight. I am giving you America because the embers sparking in your eyes have not burned out. I can see the fires within you, and I need your fire. I need your fire, if we are going to burn the sanctuaries of racism to cinders. I need the lightning in your voice. There is a storm brewing and I need your thunder to shatter the discrimination of the tempest-tossed who have chosen love without regard of love’s gender or identity. I need you to be a lighthouse steady and bright on these rocky shores, A beacon of light for those who fear the storm to guide them to calm and safe harbors. I am giving you America because I was Silent, But I am speaking now, and I am asking you to speak. I am giving you America because I love her, and I need you to save her from herself. Signed J.
