I actualled used both interchangeably, but technically, VHS is just the format which encompasses both players/recorders and just videotape players as well as video tapes themselves, while the term VCR refers to VHS systems that have a recording function (Video Cassette Recorder).
I cringe every time I hear someone say "VHS player" because no one called their VCR that back in the day.
