Bemused muser.
I'll probably talk a lot about music. Or books.

I really want this to be the year of Brian Eno's ambient discog.

I think literally a decade ago was when I tore through his lyrical albums (even My Squelchy Life).

Anyway, less dour thoughts, finished Leviathan last night; 10/10; taught me an uncomfortable amount on politics; the long criticism of the Catholic Church was an unexpected but interesting surprise.

Hey remember when the Athenians invaded Syracuse

and they were like Woahhhh guys we're gonna get so rich

wonder what happened to those guys
January 4, 2026 at 3:11 PM
Man it's even hard to explain the invasion with realpolitik, I just get "I want a new country" vibes

The admin's excuse is like a WWII speedrun

Ok now my brain is firing on this subject.

In the study of literary history you get lots of Rats and Snakes (Chinese Zodiac shi). But not many Horses.

I might have to do some investigating.

It would also be fun to go through Martin Scorsese's "religious" movies - Kundun, Silence, Last Temptation, blah.

But it's weird: I get fidgety with movies, though I can sit with a book.

Well, everyone has their inclinations.

Given the madness of the world it wouldn't hurt to pick up a Celine book... Hmm.

It's funny how low my expectations were for my Year of the Snake picks - Crime and Punishment (Dostoesvsky), Bouvard and Pecuchet (Flaubert) - and then how overwhelmed I was by both of them.
January 3, 2026 at 3:49 PM
I don't have many Horse authors for the Year of the Horse - John Barth, J. G. Ballard, Iceberg Slim, that's about it - so if anyone know anyone, holler.
January 3, 2026 at 3:43 PM
You know what, I'mma end the Year of the Snake rereading Hydriotaphia. Seems fitting.

I'm really hoping this jazz / ambient bug stays a while this year.

I guess another resolution would be to write a sequel (an actually-good one) to That Time but there's no core action I can think of.

If I wrote it before Blue, then it would just be another book of gags. Dunno. Want to try something different.

I just realized I wrote ~150k words this year.

Rookie numbers; I wrote 400k in my junior year in college.

But it's nice to know I can still have the sprightly vitality of a 20 year old.
January 1, 2026 at 3:04 PM
It would be nice to write about albums again this year.
January 1, 2026 at 2:55 PM
My only resolution this year so far is to finish Leviathan.

I guess that's too short-term a resolution.

My resolution is to read 500 books.

Not necessarily before 2027.

It's nice nothing bad happened this New Year's Day. Maybe a good sign for times to come.

I have a book out.
It's called "Blue".
It's about two supercomputers and their adventures in ruining mankind.

You can read a sample here: jayleewriter.com/books/blue/c...
Chapter 1 - Blue
Chapter 1: We are introduced to Andy and Gary. They want to find out who Homer is - the other one. Blue is a novel about two supercomputers, Andy and Gary, and their adventures in mankind's past, pres...

Also, I think this poem is not that bad

coffee order

autumn day

her skirt rustles,

sings in silk,

asks me

how does it taste

and I say,

Tastes like milk.

I will say, thinking more on it, that by Hobbes increasing taxes is not harmful.
However, living in a society so unequal that people want to break their contracts with their sovereign, is very harmful. It leads to the death of that society.
