So an update to initial thoughts here: it seems like this consortium (which grows by the day seemingly) will have access to a forked version of the TikTok algo (or, well, *a* TikTok algo) that they will then be responsible for iterating. Better than I thought they'd get but still not bullish - (1/n)
The software giant Oracle will oversee the security of Americans’ data and monitor changes and updates to its powerful recommendation technology under a new deal to avert a TikTok ban, according to a senior White House official. A copy of the algorithm, the recommendation engine that powers the app’s addictive feed of short videos, will be licensed from China to an American investor group that will oversee the app in the United States, the official said. Oracle will also invest in the new American TikTok, as will the private equity firm Silver Lake, another senior official said. It will be “secured” in the United States outside the control of TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, one of the officials said. The U.S.-run TikTok will work to retrain the copy on users’ data in the United States, and China will not have access to the data, the officials added.

1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong. 2. Don't trust anonymous sources. 3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information. 4. There's almost never a second shooter. 5. Pay attention to the language the media uses. • “We are getting reports”… could mean anything. • “We are seeking confirmation”… means they don’t have it. • “[News outlet] has learned”… means it has a scoop or is going out on limb. 6. Look for news outlets close to the incident. 7. Compare multiple sources. 8. Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers. 9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you. Nobody who responds to a platform company shutting off referral traffic with bewilderment has any business being a media executive in 2025.

This is just a failure, plain and simple.
Early on, he set an ambitious goal of reaching 500,000 paid digital subscribers by the end of 2026, a figure that would make the business sustainably profitable. The paper is not on a pace to hit that goal. It has about 115,000 total paid subscribers, with 75,000 of those digital-only subscribers, a figure that’s up from about 55,000 at the end of 2023, according to a company spokeswoman. Mr. Morse said the swift rise of generative artificial intelligence, which has quickly changed how people search and consume information, had been an unexpected challenge. “The bottom has fallen out of the entire industry,” Mr. Morse said. “Our organic traffic from Google has dropped 40 percent in the last year. Never could have predicted that.”

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
