Most aid is grants that Israel must use to purchase U.S. military equipment and services. Thus, there is a direct economic payoff back. Israel is the first line of defense against radical Islamist entities (states and stateless) that threaten Western values and democracies. Probably $$ well-spent.

'Need' is too strong a word. In service of sound, they often do. (I might use 'need' in 'poems need to sound.') In modern verse, end rhymes can grate, so I tend to keep the second rhyme internally.
