New paper alert!

We evaluated effectiveness of eDNA metabarcoding of #FreshwaterMussel communities based on previous conventional sampling methods.

Spoiler: eDNA metabarcoding agreed with conventional surveys but also detected rare species.

Today's #FishFriday post reflects on our 2014 expeditions to the rio Xingu, Brazil. Our teams collected two new species of catfishes that were just described in this 2025 paper:

If you asked me as a student, I never would have thought I'd collect a holotype

Striped Shiners (& Common Shiners) are pretty aggressive when fishing for smallies and can be a blast when using an ultralight spinning rod / 2 wt fly rod, especially for kids. Here's my daughter's catch from a few years ago.

As #GarWeek comes to a close, let's not forget an ecosystem service gars provide... being host fish for several #FreshwaterMussel species, particularly of genus Lampsilis.

Thanks @drkatfish.bsky.social, @solomonrdavid.bsky.social & others for this most wonderful time of year!

Introducing the newest 'yak in my armada - L.humilis

Fall / early winter is the best time to find deals on used kayaks (for <$100)

It'll look great on the water with Cycleptus, Perca, & O.nerka, and on special occasions Campeloma, the canoe

Pinkies have the mildest texture & flavor of the 5 Pacific Salmons - comparable to Rainbow Trout. They are fun to catch (see below... from Alaska) and are amazing to eat with lemon & pepper freshly cooked over an alder fire (especially when soaking up beautiful scenery)

Follow me for more recipes!

What percentage of people have Bluegill as the first fish they caught? I know at least 3 kids who have.

Did you know...

Black Bullheads, like other catfishes, are an important host for the reproduction of #FreshwaterMussels?

Check it out...

Newest addition to my fish collection

This Rainbow Trout Ezra Brooks decanter (from 1970) was my grandfather's that he passed down to my dad, who (finally... lol) passed down to me. It'll look great in my display case.

Did you know sponges can anchor themselves to #FreshwaterMussels?

We (@mussels4life.bsky.social) found an association b/w mussels & sponges in rio Xingu (Amazon basin). Trawled these critters up from 30+ meters. Mussels were likely only hard substrate for sponges

In seek of starter packs that deal w/ non-game fishes. Can anyone help me?

According to the FAQ from BlueSky, "Currently, starter packs do not show up in search, so to find a starter pack, a friend will have to send you the link"
