If you live in between San Antonio & Texarkana (specifically San Marcos, Austin, Taylor, Temple, McGregor, Cleburne, Fort Worth, Dallas, Mineola, Longview & Marshall) you’ve really got to try hopping on the Texas Eagle for 2-4 day trips.

It’s lovely as long as you’re not in a hurry to miss it all.

Where I’m at at this time.

And now welcome to the 1st in a 4-part series with each step costing more of my Amtrak points.

I took the Northeast Regional (Train 94) from Newark, NJ, to New Haven, CT, with a coach ticket. I spent about half the time sitting at a table in the cafe car.

It was right on time at 2 hrs 20 minutes.

I love people mover / airport shuttle style transit and wish for more places valuable enough in Texas to merit so much human activity that we need super frequent high capacity transit.

When you land at Terminal A in Newark and want to get to the Amtrak station you have to walk out to a shuttle bus to the AirTrain.

This was explained repeatedly and very politely by the bus driver.

Oh. Here’s the neat looking old stuff I flew over. I don’t know what river that is, but I think those are sunken boats you can see.
September 12, 2025 at 10:56 PM
I flew over some sprawl and some land and some old stuff.

I’ve never experienced this before. We’re boarding our flight and TSA is checking ids and bags before people get on the plane.

Random thought in the airport:

My perception is that love of football has allowed a significant shift in American media normalizing black men talking on television, being seen as experts and valuing their takes.

It seems a really good thing that seems to have happened over the last decade or so.

Got the @yimbytown.bsky.social Mayor’s sashes I’d left at the old @farmandcity.bsky.social office (and the last remaining schwag from last year) and now I’m on the #20 headed to the airport.

A thing that’s important to me right now is that the a/c on this bus is working great. Thanks bus mechanics!

I’m headed on an adventure across the country, so you may get to enjoy excited posts about riding a bus, train, or a tight curb radii.

I started out walking a half mile to North Lamar with my luggage to catch the #1 bus to my office. It’s a completely packed bus. Thanks @capmetroatx.bsky.social!

I’ve got limited amounts of my first batches of hot sauce for the year. Anyone in need of some good and some weird hot sauce will have to find me in the real world. Free but donations to @farmandcity.bsky.social are always appreciated.

Riding the light rail train that comes every three minutes in Houston is a much more pleasant post NRG game experience than the commuter rail that’s spaced out more like ten or fifteen minutes after a Q2 game, but just because of the track capacity to have more frequent trains.

Seems funny to share here that now I’ve got the Texas House going on one monitor and Dallas City Council considering parking reform on the other monitor.

A lot going on!

Live feed from the meeting of the Texas House Committee on Transportation that was supposed to start ten minutes ago. Perhaps #txlege is just very tired of all this.
May 12, 2025 at 1:11 PM
Once again I’ll be at the Texas House Committee on Transportation Thu morning asking #txlege to end the ban keeping cities from providing Safe Neighborhood Streets, like counties can give the kids in unincorporated neighborhoods.
