i am he. i am that 🦑.
i do hope Cognetti keeps making movies, found footage or otherwise. while imperfect, this was absolutely better than 825 Forest Road.

should you watch it? if you're already a fan, you may enjoy it, but it's absolutely not going to win you over otherwise.

the Hell House franchise are comfort movies for me. i've watched them dozens of times. will i watch this again? probably, and while some of the movie's flaws might soften over time, i don't think i'll ever be happy with the ending.

it isn't a conclusion at all, it's an introduction to continue making movies. why advertise this as the end if you aren't going to conclusively end it? that's cheap, and i imagine was a big factor in why so many of the people that had negative reviews felt so poorly about this after watching.

also, if you advertise a movie as the conclusion of the franchise, call it Lineage, and base the plot around explaining why so many of the people and events are connected, you should actually explain it. without spoiling too much, this movie absolutely ends on a massive cliffhanger.

it's scary in the other films because you never see it move; the camera turns away, and then returns, and the Clown is in a different position. when you know it's going to move and then you see it happen, you feel absolutely nothing at all.

it's like someone watched the other four movies in rapid succession and made their own sequel without taking time to consider some of the things that made the others work. the best example is the Hell House Clown, one of the most ubiquitous parts of the franchise.

i didn't hate it. i'm probably more forgiving about this kind of thing than most, but i liked it. i definitely enjoyed it more than Cognetti's other foray into not-found-footage, 825 Forest Road. that being said, both the change in format and some of the story choices made it feel like a fan sequel.
