Only 4 people started work on Metroid Prime: Trilogy while most of Retro Studios was busy elsewhere — a tiny team quietly rebuilt all 3 games with smoother framerate, higher-res textures, and faster loading.

Before Retro Studios began working on Metroid Prime Trilogy, they had four separate teams working on a football game, a car combat game, an RPG, and a platformer. Nintendo visited...told them to scrap everything and focus entirely on Metroid instead.

Fun fact: Retro planned for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes to have four-player online multiplayer but Nintendo cut it to local split-screen because GameCube’s had limited network adapter/capabilities e.g. only LAN.
