Very true. So many start writing because they focus on success and fame, which is odd, because this is not the life for someone who wants those things. As a life-long writer with dozens of publications and three conventionally published books....no fame here. But I love writing. So I write.

I'd say submit wherever you can. By that I mean publications and contests that match your criteria. Beware that some contests can be scams. Do your research wherever you submit.
