dialogue line that comes feels low and I turn the volume back up to hear the lines...rinse and repeat. Ad infinitum.
In my mixes I like to mix everything against DX and try not to push music and SFX up too far from DX to achieve a more consistent level and avoid this.

a show on the TV, I like to set the volume to where the dialogue feels comfortable and with a certain bite...the problem imho is when the music cues come blarring out at max level, with no attenuation, so I end up reaching for the remote to lower the volume to a pain-free level, but then the next..

Something else I often notice is that there a tendency, specially in series, to always mix music cues at the full volume the track was originally mixed (that is, with no attenuation on the fader) while all of the other elements are playing with a certain attenuation on the fader. Yes it would be for Pro Tools. And you're right. The video engine uses about 5GB if RAM alone.
Maybe go for the 24GB version to be sure?
