The Merced Grasslands didn’t get a lot of rain this year, but enough fell last week to refill some pools. This is the kind of year where you get to sample for fairy shrimp while enjoying a fabulous, fragrant bloom. Keeping my fingers crossed for the teeny tiny California tiger salamander larvae.

Here’s a tiny tadpole shrimp to remind you that nature is resilient. The California fairy shrimp next to it is also tiny. These last rains renewed the vernal pools in the Sacramento Prairie, and we are all grateful. I ❤️shrimp
