Highly recommend The Owl Men of Shanidar by Coy Hall 🦉

Fans of sci-fi classics like Dune will love this book! Engaging story of colonists trying to find a new place for humanity, but their shackles to an ancient society & religious zealotry may have them repeating the mistakes of the past.
A black paperback book titled "The Owl Men of Shanidar" a novel by Coy Hall. Below the title is a drawn image in a style of a Grecian urn with an orange owl in the center of circular designs. The back of a book which reads: A dead planet. Where are the owl men? Who is the wanderer? On a colonial planet isolated in deep space, archeologist Brynn Silva discovers a rusted claw in the desert. The moment is a sea of change for the colonists of Shanidar. Although abandoned cities abound on the planet, no alien remains have ever been discovered. No tombs. No cemeteries. No artifacts of death. Only the ruins and artwork of a vanished society. Until now. Here, reaching through a wound in the sand, is one of the Owl Men. As Brynn, a xenolinguist rival, and a cult of zealots called The Resurrectionists strive to understand the past and future of Shanidar, a mysterious stranger appears on the horizon, taking the colonists in directions no one can predict. Is the wanderer a survivor of a prior expedition, as he claims? Is he one of the beings that inhabited Shanidar in the distant past? Or is he, as the Resurrectionists come to believe, a messiah from the stars? On Shanidar, horror is in the eye of the beholder. Pride nails done 💅😁

Had to mix my own colours because of course I don't have pink polish and my regular blue is much darker - think I matched the Transgender Flag pretty well though 🏳️‍⚧️

Think this is the 1st time I've had pink polish on my nails! Even as a youngster I avoided pink like the plague 😂

Happy Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Went to my local flag raising ceremony this afternoon & got a lawn sign. Looking forward to more events this month!

Watched a couple of great things on Netflix this weekend!

Unbroken is a documentary about a family of 7 Jewish siblings who survived WWII in Germany through the kindness of others. Very touching and informative.

Michael Shannon is phenomenal in Take Shelter (2011). When a father begins having strange dreams of storms and hallucinating, he thinks he needs psychological help. But what if his visions are something else?

Slow burn, tense family drama.

Another weekend of cooking a gigantic meal, this time for a friend I haven't seen in ages. Made a Middle Eastern feast including za'atar spiced pita chips, hummus, tzatziki sauce, tabbouleh, falafel, and baklava - so yummy 😋
Flaky layers of phyllo dough stuffed with pistachios and walnuts soaked in honey syrup. Falafel balls, mostly green from herbs, browned on the bottoms. Tabbouleh a salad of finely chopped parsley, tomatoes and couscous. Five plates of food. From left to right, top row: white tzatziki sauce, beige hummus. From left to right, bottom row: fresh pita cut in triangles, a platter of fresh vegetables including cauliflower, broccoli, red and green peppers, carrots, celery, and cucumber, and a bowl of browned crispy pita chips.

Been a nice Easter weekend with hubby, including bringing a delicious dinner to my in-laws today.

I made a Ukrainian feast of vegetarian cabbage rolls, roasted potatoes, paska (traditional Easter bread), & a pull-apart cupcake cake (not traditional but Ukrainian approved, lol).

Rolled cabbage rolls in a glass dish with tomato sauce Two loaves of paska bread. One is a circle of braided dough, the other is a circle decorated with a braided cross. Both loaves are golden brown and dotted with raisins.

Life may be tough, but butterflies, scary movies, scary books, & time with my sister sure helps 🥰

Yesterday we visited the butterfly conservatory, saw movie The Woman in the Yard (3.5/5 🖤), & I bought The Reformatory by Tananarive Due & The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones 📚

Enjoying a well deserved movie day with some of sci-fi horror! From the Alien Predator Total Destruction Collection I'll probably watch Aliens 3, Predator, & AVP.

But to kick off my movie extraterrestrial extravaganza, I'm revisiting District 9, which I highly recommend!

You know spring is on its way when the chipmunks come out and I actually go outside too 😂

Enjoyed a nice 5km walk this morning and saw 2 big turkey vultures in a tree, Canada Geese by the river, a lovely crow, & lots of other birds.

The river bank is covered in long dead grass which is plastered down along the ground after a long winter. From a pedestrian bridge over the river, the camera is pointed down river showing the banks on either side. Each bank is filled with bare trees. There are wispy white clouds across the blue sky above. The water is moving too fast to reflect the sky.

Yesterday I was on point in the kitchen making a belated birthday celebration meal for hubby 🥳🎂

I made tourtiere (a French Canadian meat pie with Beyond Meat), potatoes Dauphinoise, sautéed spinach, and Granny Cake for dessert - om nom nom 😋

Finished re-reading All Quiet on the Western Front yesterday & damn, it rips my heart out every time 💔

And because I enjoy torturing myself, today I started reading The Wars by Timothy Findley 😭

Another long day working on cleaning out Sister's old house, but I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel, and it's not a train 😂

Now enjoying my fav chips, a super tall beer from Muskoka Brewery, & Terminator 2. Fingers crossed by this time next week I'll finally be done 🍻

Great day! That's 16 cubic yards (12 cubic meters) of waste gone - woohoo! Great service by Junk Professionals who filled their entire truck with decades worth of junk.

Now I'm relaxing with a well earned beer and watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Second choice for silly movies was Shark Side of the Moon and I was not disappointed!

Shark-human hybrids living on the moon attempt to hijack a shuttle so they can return to Earth from whence they came. Loony ride that scratched the ridiculous itch I had 😂

In my recent escapade of buying books in places that shouldn't tempt me with books, I was at the bank & couldn't resist buying these 3 beauties: What Dreams May Come by Matheson, As I Lay Dying by Faulkner, & Girl, Interrupted by Kaysen. Books for me, money for a local charity, that's a Win-Win 📚❤

First beautiful sunset from the balcony of my sister's new apartment! Yesterday was a super long day getting everything moved, but she's super happy.

Few more things to tidy up tomorrow, but for today I'm parked firmly on the couch and enjoying a much needed rest day!

My journey to Mordor has begun! I'm walking 1,461 km to earn Lord of the Rings Bling, to be completed by March 25, 2026 (that's when Frodo destroys the ring).

To help on my quest, I started reading The Magical Worlds of the Lord of the Rings by David Colbert which I'll update on Storygraph.
