Good senior/staff+ engineers are able to solve hard problems.

But what sets apart some of the best I've worked with is that they are able to solve hard problems by introducing the least amount of complexity.

What I really want to emphasise, is that the gap between good and great can be huge.

Reading the interviews of Gabriel García Márquez and this passage stands out to me, from the 1970s but relevant in this time, that in this era the fight must be for collective happiness, which as he astutely describes, is the only kind of just happiness

AI is the only field where people can introduce themselves as experts whilst simultaneously declaring they don't know how AI works.

If you don't know how it works, you're a user, not an expert.

AND ONE MORE THING:

If you intend to fight the authoritarians, you are going to have to accept the need to show solidarity for people you don't like, or who don't like you, or who you blame for this whole mess.

You cannot give ground on basic rights. And rights have to be rights for everyone.

Bringing up the flaws in an idea is not killing the idea. Quite the opposite.

Raising issues and solving them is how you successfully bring an idea to life.

The trick is in recognising there will always be problems and facing them head on rather than pretending they don't exist.
