Luca Guadagnino, with his fine-tuned attention to novelistic detail, proves once he again that he’s one of our finest living directors and interpreters of queer stories.

Daniel Craig does career-best work, Drew Starkey is a real find, Jason Schwartzman turns in a performance that feels beautifully lived-in, and Lesley Manville, perhaps one of our great chameleon thespians, is completely unrecognizable.

The film’s surrealist touches—vividly realized dreams, stylized CG matte paintings, deliberately anachronistic soundtrack, and a fantastical mid-century CDMX backlot set—are a wonder and left me questioning what, if any of what happens occurs literally, or in a dream, or in a drug-induced trip.
