It’s been an incredible blessing to teach my own kids. It helps to understand both sides of the educational transaction…it doesn’t hurt that both girls are pretty exceptional, sometimes in spite of my teaching.

I’ve worked mostly through two series over the last 10 years, The American Student works and my other series The Domesticated Artist. They’ve crossed over twice. The first was a painting of my oldest working remotely on schoolwork in Covid and now this image of Leah in our kitchen working on artwork

I’ve taught art for 25 yrs. Absolutely, I believe anyone can learn how to do this, but it takes mastering foundational principles and techniques (I call it a visual vocabulary) and then to learn how to communicate with them. It takes some time…also you have to really want to do it.

The longest series I’ve explored has nothing to do with figurative work, but instead the light, shadow, and abstraction created by urban structures; specifically fire escapes. #contemporaryart #urbanlandscape
