I'm finally in the thick of writing the final battle. This excerpt probably gives a hint of what's going on, as well as how I write combat. It'll flow smoother once I do an editing pass.
Already she could see some of the creature’s arms, severed at the elbow or shoulder, beginning to bubble and reform. Valeria tried to push her way through the crowd, the massive curve of her blade carving a gap around her, as she tried to cross the lines. Over and over, she shouted for her soldiers to remember their training. She’d been about to remind them once again when a second, mighty explosion rang through the air. Her face turned to the skies as she saw it ignite in false sunlight, soldiers’ bodies flying through the air as stakes and splinters fell in the distance. It was in the southernmost courtyard. They’d broken through the south and much faster than she’d hoped. Time slowed for her as she surveyed the situation, her gaze locking on Kurt’s figure as she sprinted along the ramparts. This was his job, she reminded herself. She was commander on the ground. He was commanding from the walls. Even if they’d never fought together, she had to trust him. So her focus shifted back to the masses of Scorched pouring into the fort from the nearby breach, and just in time to see three lumbering Berserkers tossing aside their smaller companions as they crashed through the defensive lines. She watched Patchwork and mercenary tossed easily as the brutes flailed wildly at her soldiers. Valeria saw the many arrows buried in their shoulders and sticking out from their chests. They tucked their shoulders and crashed into the Patchwork, burying themselves deep into their lines. Smaller scorched followed as the line broke, and she realized she needed to act. With a final flourish of her blade, she cut down a half dozen of her attackers and cleared a space for herself. Then, freed for a moment, her foot planted hard before sending her through the air. In an instant she’d crossed the distance, her cracking the neck of the nearest of the giant Scorched. The beast went tumbling forward before she launched herself upward yet again, her body shifting toward another of them. This on…
