Brazil is home to Sistema Unimed, one of the largest cooperative networks in the world. Its 339 co-ops are owned by 100k+ doctors and physicians to provide health services and insurance to 20 million people. Unimed has proven itself to be a viable alternative to profit-based healthcare.
Our structure We are 339 cooperatives with independent administrative, financial and assistance management 117 thousand cooperative doctors 19.9 million customers + 29 thousand accredited hospitals, clinics and services 116 own hospitals In addition to emergency care, laboratories and diagnostic centers to guarantee the quality of assistance provided to our beneficiaries. 20% of doctors in Brazil work at Unimed 156 thousand direct jobs generated by the Unimed System 92% presence throughout the national territory

Cooperatives are an alternative economic model to shareholder capitalism. They enable stakeholder groups — workers, customers, and producers — to democratically participate in the economic decisions that impact their lives. Cooperatives decentralize power and wealth, allowing democracy to thrive.
Cooperatives decentralize economic and political power. By allowing stakeholder groups to democratically participate in economic decisions and elect representatives, the concentration of power within businesses expands to include every member of society. Marginalized groups would be able to exert tangible influence over the decisions that (often disproportionately) impact them. Because power is decentralized, so are income and wealth distributions. The rich would no longer have the unilateral ability to set their own pay at the expense of society. There is a reason unions exist: business owners have the ability to make decisions that can result in food insecurity, income inequality, and homelessness that harm working people, and no one elected them. A strong democracy is one in which both political and economic institutions are organized as participatory organizations so that no one person or group is capable of enriching themselves at the expense of everyone else. Otherwise, the unelected owning class concentrates wealth and power and influences government to further amass more wealth and power. Shareholder capitalism has resulted in an economy where profit is held above people. Cooperativism promotes people over profit by giving power to the people. Advocate for a society that promotes the one-person one-vote ideal in both political and economic spheres. The better world is possible.
