A storyteller at heart.
My writing has improved quite a bit. I learnt many tips and tricks, especially when I'm writing for media pieces like articles, features, or even a release.

Looking forward to our last class. See everyone there!

Don't have any tips to add, but he gives some great tips when it comes to practicing our presentations.

The one that stood out the most to me was tip #3 to focus on 1 or 2 improvements at a time. Focusing on too many can cause us to poorly develop on each.

1) Features are long, while news articles get straight to the point.

2) Features can be ever-green, while news tends to become irrelevant.

3) Features are more for entertainment or promotion, while news is more to inform.

We've learnt quite a lot this semester, but the two things I'll walk away with is to apply the 3 c's to my writing and the different ways to write news articles and releases.

I would start the article with an eye-catching fact or a story from a student's experience.

I would use some statistical data but not too much to distract the audience.

Interview professionals who've done research in the area. Looking for them on social media or research databases.

If I were to write a feature, I would write on 'Jonestown Massacre' for an audience of 'true crime enthusiasts' with the purpose of 'entertaining and informing.'

My hook would be, "(word limit, look below)" and I would try to publish my work in a 'true crime magazine or blog site."

Yes, the lead is engaging, as it answers the 5W1H. The target audience, of course, is Canadian consumers who want to know more about what they're buying.

We can even further narrow this down to those consumers have iPhones, due to the being only on the iOS platform.

We've all got nerves when it comes to public speaking, but we shouldn't let that come in our way.

I take a deep breath, calm my mind and get going. The words come out and it's usually good. Sometimes there's a slip up which catches me, but I just pause and continue.

A) Mic Check ❌

You should deal with the technical details before, as something as simple as a mic check might distract your audience and set a tone you don't want.

But hey, sometimes things don't work out. You check it, and it still happens. If so, go on with your speech.

Yes, I agree. Goals allow us to understand what reaction we want or expect from the audience. Based on those same goals, we can clarify how we can achieve them.

You can have multiple goals with a speech, but it's necessary to limit them so you don't confuse your audience.

I'd hit the audience with a hook they can't resist.

It's like the first line of a book; you need to make sure your words will pull the audience in.

Adding some storytelling never hurt anyone. Maybe some comedy or an oddly fun fact. It's up to you and, well, who your audience is.

Preparation is key.

You don't need to be an expert in what you're presenting, but you should have a basic grasp.

Practice and perfect your style. It's not a 1 size fits all.

I don't have a particular presenter I look up to, but I've learned to develop my skills by actually doing.

Tim uses many techniques throughout the Ted Talk.

He starts with an anecdote, carefully crafting his story to be relatable (guilty here) and engaging by adding comedic relief.

He breaks down the concept into a visual example accessible to all audiences. (the monkey exists)

Yes! It's easy to want to talk, but active listening is difficult.

When you're actively listening to what the other person is saying, and analyze each remark, you'll be able to create new questions which guide the interview.

Although difficult, it's something I strive to improve on.

Being prepared for the topic or person you will interview is truly important.

Preparation gives you an understanding of what to ask and how to react to answers, allowing for the smooth flow of the interview.

You don't want to be taking time to think of a question during the interview.

All the tips mentioned in the video are great. However, the one that stood out to me was 'record faithfully.'

When we write for news and work with information, we must ensure the person's message is correctly interpreted. There's no space for bias, only truth.

"BE NEWSWORTHY!"

Not everything a business does needs to be a press release; a simple social media post or an email can do it.

If you're hiring people or promoting your business, a social media or job posting will do.

Only major events with impact should have a press release.

Duolingo! I don't know what their marketing team runs on, but I'm always invested when a Duo ad pops up.

It's always something curious, unexpected, and shocking. They don't follow trends; they tend to make them.

The ad targets businesses or business professionals on X (formerly Twitter), offering them the chance to join an Advertising workshop.

There is a clear call to action, even mentioning when the event will be.

It's a good ad.

I don't have another step to add, but I'd say the most important step is setting goals for your PR Campaign.

Setting these goals lets us know where we want our campaign to go and what results we expect.

The ad is quite effective as it has:

- a CTA 👀,
- creates a sense of urgency (until August 21st 🗓️),
- indicates benefit (free 6-pack bun 🍞).
