And that's why we kept our military war time manpower at 290.000 w trained reserves of 900.000 (now over 1 million) to draw from, over 1500 heavy artillery, etc etc

Yeah, we did imagine it might happen again.
That was assumption when I served 40 years ago and we traines precalculated artillery strikes to Helsinki harbor, airport, Parliament, TV towers, ... all strategic points needed.

We do prepare, of course.
But as you mentioned, the Russians do know we will not start the war, so they can pretend as much they will to "build up".
But I think our intelligence gathering has not declined in the last 80+ years when one of my childhood neighbor spotted convoy to Murmansk.

I strongly agree w your critizising of European general unpreparedness. We have had our own "Quislings" but they have been in clear minority. And many repented immediately after Russian attack in 2022.

They seem to not realize their young men will die in future Russian wars if they loose this war - just like their greatgrandfathers died by masses in Suomussalmi, Raattee and Kuhmo.

They are too much bound to the (Soviet) mind set of avoiding risk taking.
In short term it is less riskier to avoid "out-of-the-book" manouvres with potentially higher enemy (and own) losses but that leads to incremental and more "equal" losses - attrition game where the one w more resources wins.

... valitettavasti epäonnistuneista päätöksistä vastuulliset "viralliset" voivat piiloutua ties minkä muodollisen kiemuran taakse ja erityisesti ylimmät päättäjät (HUS Siltasairaala, Migri, Apotti, ... jne) ylennetään kavereiden toimesta seuraavaan virkaan, jossa sopivuus on pätevyyttä tärkeämpää.

As nice a news as this is, I cannot help but wonder it this kind of attrition warfare is what Ukraine should be doing with a country that has vastly more resources, especially manpower?
