It’s tempting to put Luxon’s absence down to cowardice. He “may be a drop-nuts”, as Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi so poetically put it. After all, he scuttled out of Wellington during the first reading of the Treaty Principles Bill and refused to front up to November’s hīkoi. He even waited until the parliamentary year was over before announcing his absence from Waitangi, swerving media scrutiny. But I think it’s a shallow apathy, not timidity, that keeps Luxon away. He’s not going to Waitangi because he’s got nothing to say. He appears wholly incurious about Māori history, language, culture and the role of the Treaty in New Zealand’s past - even removing a mention of local land wars from a draft speech to the Koroneihana in August. Perhaps that’s because of his long spell overseas, although you can still read a book offshore. How else do you explain his casual bargaining away of its principles in coalition negotiations, regardless of the ramifications on social cohesion? He couldn’t even be bothered to read a draft of the bill when it was first put before Cabinet. Or his clumsy gaffes, such as badly and repeatedly declaring that Māori ceded sovereignty to the Crown? His easy dismissal of re reo Māori language in government communications when he’d introduced it to his airline’s services.
