Since 2022, ICE has been under a consent decree that stipulates immigration agents cannot arrest people without warrants in the Chicago area unless there’s reason to believe someone is in the U.S. illegally and would flee before a judge could issue an arrest warrant.

It’s been 125 years since the Chicago River was famously reversed by creating the 28-mile Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, which carried sewage away from Lake Michigan — the city’s source of drinking water — and sent it downstream.

Statement from Illinois State Police about arrests of protesters outside Broadview ICE facility.
BROADVIEW - This morning, a number of individuals repeatedly blocked a street outside of the Broadview U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility. After providing repeated instructions and opportunities to move to the designated protest areas, 11 individuals were ultimately arrested. Numbers are subject to change as more information becomes available. Blocking the street and occupying areas outside of the designated zones presents a serious public safety hazard, hampers residents’ ability to navigate their own Village, negatively impacts local businesses, makes it difficult for third parties (such as lawyers) to enter the facility to support detained individuals, and creates a dangerous situation where fast-moving vehicles are encountering people. There are two designated protest areas outside the ICE facility. These areas were established to allow people to exercise their First Amendment rights, while protecting public safety. The designated areas were also established to allow residents and businesses access to their homes and buildings without the risk of potentially hitting someone in the street, and to limit disruptions to those residents and employees. The area south of the protest areas are local access only for local businesses and residents. Illinois law provides that individuals cannot stand on a road and obstruct traffic. Law enforcement officers at Broadview will continue giving clear and straightforward directions and commands to crowds, along with numerous opportunities for individuals to comply, in keeping with de-escalation best practices and state and federal law. Law enforcement will transport arrested individuals to either the Broadview Police Department at 2350 S. 25th Avenue in Broadview or the Cook County Jail at 2700 S. California Avenue in Chicago. It’s unclear exactly how many drugs are entering IDOC facilities through the mail, according to data obtained by WTTW News. From January to mid-December of 2024, 779 synthetic cannabinoids were discovered, according to data. The “point of discovery” for that drug type was 188 by mail, while 410 were discovered “in cell” and 156 were discovered “on person.” That data also showed there were 419 suspected synthetic cannabinoid overdoses last year, of which 229 were “staff exposures.”

The lawsuit disclosed that Treacy owned several military-style weapons, including an AR-15, an Extar EXP 556, a semi-automatic pistol, as well as a Century Arms VZ, an AK/Kalashnikov-style firearm. This was the 3rd shooting investigation of his career, records show. 8/13

In 2016, Treacy shot and killed Joshua Beal during a funeral procession in Mount Greenwood. Treacy was not punished for the shooting, but was suspended for 90 days for failing to register a gun with CPD as required. Records show he did not serve that suspension. 7/13

There were two other lawsuits settled since 2019 for around $100,000 each involving Treacy, Elizondo and Salgado. Some of Treacy’s records from COPA, the police oversight agency, contained the following note. 6/13

Plane Crash CHICAGO tH = The crash: • private plane in a residential ares on the Northwest Side Jan. 1 has been blamed on pilot inexperience and freezing drizzle. A coroner's jury Thursday placed the blame for, the crash, which killed four of the plane's six oc-cupants. John Haigh, a special deputy Cook County coroner who investigated the crash, was the main witness. He testified the pilot was not federally rated to fly the two-engine Cessna plane. The deputy coroner said the pi-lot, Thomas G. Somlo, 37, of suburban Skokle flew into leing conditions of freezing drizzle and very low clouds while approaching O'Hare International Airport from the east for & landing. "Somlo had neither the training nor expertence to cope with the conditions," Haigh said, "and he Just ran out of time." The plane struck the home of Dr. James V. Mennella, about three miles east of O'Hare. No one in the physician's home was injured. The plane tore a hole in a bedroom wall. Somlo was returning with his family and a maid from a Plori-da vacation. Killed in the crash were his wife, Ginette, 30; her mother, Mrs. Elise Vidal, 55, of Par-is, France; the Somlo's daughter, Susan, 5, and the family maid, Juana Cubias, 20, of San Salvador, El Salvador.
