Currently working in #Shanghai | PhD from MRC-CBU/Cambridge Uni | Gates Cambridge | interested in neuroscience of memory | you can call me Alex
Here in China (in my exile from the #EU), I am still allowed to call this "Leberwurst" even though it contains no meat. #veggie

Jokes aside: the first self-made bread spread I am actually happy with.

In the end, we had to walk a bit though.

Unfortunately, we blindly trusted a Chinese cycling app called #XingZhe, which on two occasions let us astray just "tiny" bit, which was annoying but taught as a valuable lesson.

... with some breathtaking scenery. While I haven't cycled in loads of places (mostly UK & Germany), the cycling in #China in the last days was the best experience I had so far. Also such a nice difference to the insanity that is traffic in #Shanghai.

95% of the cycling infrastructure around the lake offers a silky smooth ride...

Instead of flying somewhere I bought a carbon road bike (I promise no #midlifecrisis) and we rented a car to drive to Taihu (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Tai) to give it a spin.

If you live close to #Shanghai #China and like cycling, it's definitely a must do. It was just amazing. Some impressions:

My mind is blown! Thanks to @ozvardal.bsky.social, I can now run MS Word from the comfortable of my #linux operation system.

Check out: github.com/xiagw/winapps

It worked for me but I have to warn you. It's an involved process where you have to carefully follow the instructions.

You use that much daily? Here is my cumulative use:

The difference in recent years is relatively negligible though.

While being in the final stretches of working on a revision, I had enough with fiddling around with each #ggplot in #rstats until it looks good saved.

So, I wrote some custom code & might put everything in a guide if there is interest.

I would love to hear how other deal with this problem.

I've just added a personal trainer function to my python-based heart-rate monitor that I created for my personal use.

While I am far from viewing LLMs & AI etc. through a rosy lens, this is a perfect example to illustrate the strengths of these tools.

Final post #ohbm2025 post (I promise).

I have never seen that many different species of wild animals in a city before coming to #Brisbane.

Also a thing that happened today is that I gave an interview about my experience of being a post doc in China and Fudan.

Amazing #RegisteredReport led by Sumaiyah Raza from @mrccbu.bsky.social.

We (again) found evidence against a memory benefit of spatial novelty. However, this time we did find a retroactive benefit of rest, which highlights that more work is needed here.

Snippet of code to create flat map figures for surface-based #neuroimaging #fMRI data all inside #Rstats using the amazing ciftiTools package.

Did you ever wanted to see a visualisation how two common brain 🧠 network parcellations (Yeo 7 vs. CAB NP) differ?

Here is a small something I quickly cooked up because I was curious myself.

#neurosky #neuro #brain #brainsky #neuroimaging

I am very proud of this one but I didn't think I will get the next achievements.

They are actually pretty nice :)

White asparagus is indeed the only typical/popular German thing that I really love. Luckily, there is a place in #Shanghai.

🤤🤤🤤

For #rstats people working on computing environments without GUI, you should check out the package `txtplot`.

E.g. this density plot is pretty useful to get an idea what my data looks like:

I finally had time to do a really cool thing I wanted to for a long time, which is to do a cycle trip to and around #Tiananmen #Beijing.

There are no restrictions at all for cyclists. So in my mind, it's the best way to explore the city on a nice day. Beijing's spring is magnificent.

Here is my favourite shot from the #diving trip of a Golden Damsel (I think) in Racha Noi, Phuket (Thailand).
