Yes, but it is hard to actually get that to happen - especially with regard to American citizens. We’ll see how long that status quo lasts, though, given the speedy descent into autocracy.

I have replied to this line of commentary in a few sub threads, & I have grown tired of my own text. I will, therefore, just say that your statement is correct. :)

I would like to see more robust adherence to ICC norms across the world and, yes, with egregious crimes occurring at a level beyond the State. That said, I do find some comfort in knowing that there is at least SOME accountability for SOME bad people. It’s a start.

While the ICC’s reach re: the U.S. remains largely symbolic, it is, a functioning institution that can call international attention to abuses & influence public perception. It also does provide a not-insignificant amount of accountability for those nations that adhere to/ are involved in it. 🪡

Yes, I am aware that the United States is not currently involved with the ICC. There are a number of ways the ICC, in its present form, falls short of being able to provide truly comprehensive accountability to rule of law. It does, however, still have the power to name and shame unlawful actions. 🪡
