I’m absolutely thrilled to share that I was awarded a Starting Grant (#ERCStG) of €1.5 million by @erc.europa.eu!

For the next 5 years, I’ll investigate how to end vicious cycles in state-citizen interactions.

I’ll regularly post news about the project & advice about ERC applications here.

Yesterday, I did my second DHL relay race with an amazing team: @henrikseeberg.bsky.social, @lindekilde.bsky.social, C. Green-Pedersen, & @lucascoutoz.bsky.social.

I had the goal of running the 5k below 21 minutes & came in at 20:34, my new personal record. Now looking forward to the 2026 race! 😊

Just finished the Aarhus half marathon (my first recorded one ever) and it was challenging, but also really fun! 😊

I even met Christoffer Green-Pedersen on the way and gave him a high five as we were both running. 😄

I hope to meet even more people from our department at the next run in 2026! 😁

After 10 years of doing research in Historical Political Economy, this fall I’ll finally get a chance to teach a survey course on the field & I’m really looking forward to it! 😊

I thought this would be an opportunity to create a syllabus with many essential contributions to this growing field.

🚨 What are the long-term effects of imperialism & authoritarianism on voting behavior? 🚨

I recently gave a presentation that speaks to this question at Stanford University's @theeuropecenter.bsky.social. It’s based on a paper with D Gingerich.

Here is the recording: www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8Np...

After a long time, I’m back to the Bay Area for 10 days! ☀️ It’s already bringing back a lot of memories from my stay here in 2011 and 2012. ☺️

If anyone has research interests in common with me and would like to meet up in Berkeley, Palo Alto, or San Francisco, let me know. 😊

In the last few weeks, I have received a very warm welcome from my new colleagues at the Department of Political Science at Aarhus University.

My chapter focuses on “Bureaucracies in HPE” and deals with the characteristics, origins, and effects of bureaucratic systems throughout history.

Ungated version: janvogler.net/HPE_Bureaucr...

It is just one of the many essential HPE topics covered in the volume! 😊

It feels amazing to get one of the first copies of the new Oxford Handbook of Historical Political Economy, which was edited by Jeff Jenkins & Jared Rubin. 🥳

The release of this book is an important moment for the emerging field of HPE!

For me, it was an honor to make a small contribution to it. 🙂

It was a great privilege to be a part of the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Konstanz for the past two years.

When I leave the city, I will not only miss this beautiful view, but also the friendly, collegial, & extremely supportive atmosphere that we have here.

A long-held dream has come true for me: I have accepted a position as associate professor of political science at Aarhus University, where I will start working this spring.

It was a difficult and rocky path to get there, and I’m immensely grateful for the support that I have received along the way.
