Also, it is never discussed that farm subsidies have a strategic dimension as well. By keeping an otherwise uncompetitive sector alive they maintain a critical national survival asset for times of severe crisis and war. They are a precautionary measure, an element of "staatliche Daseinsvorsorge".
Agricultural subsidies do not end up in farmers' pockets alone.

Consumers (lower prices)
Landowners (higher land rents)

are both potential recipients, too. Very hard to estimate. Any new studies out there?
