As Trump describes it, Chicago is the "worst and most dangerous city in the world." It's a hellhole, he says - a killing field, a disaster. Well, I spent another morning in downtown Chicago, and I guess I'm lucky to be alive? Chicago remains a beautiful and fantastic place to live.

This toad is not impressed by our technological marvels. Anaxyrus terrestris, the Southern toad; Lake county, Florida (14 June 2025).

So help me god, I adore both Jaws III and Jaws: The Revenge for some inexplicable reason. They just can’t do what they’re supposed to do, but they still exist. Watching Jaws: The Revenge now. Michael Caine down south. Shark with revenge in its heart. Awesome, mon.

I'm back from a three-week (or so) roadtrip from Chicago to Key West and back again. Lots of hiking and camping in between. Lots of photos. What a trip! Here's Lepisosteus platyrhincus, the Florida gar, snagged by iPhone in Marion county, Florida (26 July 2025).

Took a break from grading and headed outdoors with the family for Mother's Day. Our serpent friends were most certainly active, out, and about! Nerodia sipedon sipedon, the Northern watersnake; DuPage county, Illinois (11 May 2025). #herps #NerodiaSipedon #snakes #reptiles #nature #wildlife

Good question, Atlantic. I also wonder why young people are so bummed out.

SINNERS: "I want your music, and I want your stories." Sinners is an incredible film. Just incredible. Many angles here, but I absolutely loved the drive of the lead (white) vampire to suck the lifeblood out of black-rooted music. Absolutely on point.

Anolis equestris, the Cuban knight anole; Miami-Dade county, Florida (11 June 2016). Non-native to the state but now well established across much of the Florida peninsula, especially South Florida. #herps #lizards More lizards: floridensis.com/codex-lizards/

One big beefcake of a snake: Nerodia taxispilota, the Brown watersnake; Levy county, Florida (30 October 2016). They like to bask in foliage hanging over water. When you hear about a snake falling into a boat from a tree, it was probably taxispilota. #herps #snakes floridensis.com/codex-snakes/

Triple-Shot: Thamnophis saurita sackenii, the Peninsula ribbon snake; Volusia county, Florida (06 April 2024). A moderately young, elegant, slender, and agile snake. Ribbons don't get enough respect! #herps #snakes floridensis.com/codex-snakes/

Some images from the Hands Off protest in Oak Park, Illinois -- taken as I returned from the Daley Plaza protest in downtown Chicago. A lively, enthusiastic, and active crowd. More shots from Oak Park here: floridensis.com/2025/04/05/h...

So, so happy. Just had my first visit to Oak Park's freshly-opened Dandelion Bookshop on Oak Park Ave (just south of South Blvd). Awesome shop, and I'm thrilled they're here. Support your local bookstores, y'all! Now it's time to plant myself into HERA by Jennifer Saint. Rah!
