‘You’re only as good as your last trick,’ (so said my late mum, and I’ve found no reason to disagree).
Scottish journalist and art lover. Writing Book Two. Founder member & former co-chair Women in Journalism Scotland
Thanks to Airts & Pairts, I can indulge my niche interest in long-dead mid-20th century women artists. This Substack post, however, has had a lot of views since I posted it, so it feels like I'm not alone. Miss Dick was, I feel, an EXCELLENT WOMAN.

My latest Airts & Pairts is about being 'in the room' at Fidra Fine Art in Gullane, East Lothian with artist @bourbonandwolfe.bsky.social - at the same time as Waterland, her brilliant and wide ranging new collection of work.

At Edinburgh’s Blackwelll Bookshop last night to usher Martin MacIntyre’s A Summer Like No Other, into the world on stage two of its journey. The novel was first published in Gaelic as Samhradh ’78. During a Q&A with Marion Sinclair @publishingscotland.bsky.social 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The media reaction to the death of the Scottish artist Jack Vettriano last week - in which I played a small part - got me thinking.

I’m not a great one for Valentine-ing, but I remembered taking this photo of street art in Brussels in the wee small hours during a press trip to Belgium. The date on my phone says February 2016. Funny how - of all the art I’ve seen in the last ten years - this image stood out in the crowd.

I finished series three of Somebody Somewhere (Sky Comedy) and, although the last episode is a totey bit winsome, in contrast to all the others, it was pitch perfect.
And no-one got kaboomed (my new pet hate in a drama!)
Apparently, they are not making another series, which is a darned shame.

Because today is beyond dreich in my corner of Scotland, I offer you a Liz Knox painting, Sunflowers & Windows.
ICYMI (what do you MEAN you missed it?) my latest Substack is all about Liz, poetry, painting and the complex business of writing a life.

Here’s the page. Still wondering about Joan and the Roberts. They must have had friends in common. The only other Scottish artist Lilian Browse talks about is Robin Philipsson.
February 3, 2025 at 6:36 PM
Tracked down this beauty online as keen to read Joan Eardley section.
@damianbarr.bsky.social - Lilian mentions the Roberts but only in relation to Scottish ballet, Donald of the Burthens, which they designed. She was a dance critic as well as an art dealer.

Writing a life…
I’ve picked up the metaphorical pen and written a new piece for my Airts & Pairts Substack. It’s inspired by writing an obituary @heraldscotland.bsky.social about the Scottish artist Liz Knox, who died just before Christmas.

Apologies… this isn’t a swipey post. You’ll need to zoom in, but I assure you it’s worth it! To mark Burns Day, please enjoy the wit & wisdom of my mum, with this ‘feminism according to Flora’ style Reply to the Toast to the Lassies, delivered on 21 January 1983 in Kilmaurs Scout Hall in Ayrshire.

My obituary for Scottish artist, Liz Knox, is in today’s @heraldscotland.bsky.social
It’s always an honour - if a bit daunting - to sum up the life of someone you knew and admired in 1000 words.
I hope I did Liz justice.

Just finished this book by Ailsa Tanner about ‘Glasgow Girl’ Bessie MacNicol. A Christmas present from my best friend. Bessie’s gaiety in her 20s shines through both in her work and a handful of letters written to fellow artist E.A. ‘Ned’ Hornel.

I didn’t actually write this on a bench in God’s Own Country, but please be assured the sentiment still applies.

Sky Arts #PAOTY 2024 proved controversial to some, but winner Brogan Bertie’s commissioned painting of news leg-end Lorraine Kelly made her greet. Me too. Here’s why…

During a whirlwind trip to Glasgow & Edinburgh last week, I also caught Kate Downie’s Conversations with Joan @womenslibrary.bsky.social about her ongoing interrogation of Joan Eardley’s paintings of Glasgow kids in 1950s & 1960s

It’s on until 25 January.

Controversial, but having seen Lorraine Kelly’s knees in-the-flesh, I’m a fan of Brogan Bertie’s Sky Arts #PAOTY portrait of the broadcaster. It’s on show at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. Lush brushwork.

My latest Substack was sparked by reading Emily Dickinson’s poem, ‘This World is not Conclusion’.
This, in turn, reminded me of my reaction to one particular work at a Louise Bourgeois exhibition in Edinburgh’s Fruitmarket Gallery in 2013.

I ‘Substacked’ about almost forgotten artist Anne Estelle Rice. One time partner of Scottish Colourist JD Fergusson & best friend of author Katherine Mansfield, her star may be rising again. Her painting, A Bowl of Fruit, just sold for £112,700. ICYMI: airtsandpairts.substack.com/p/an-excepti...

Take a minute to admire Anne Estelle Rice’s portrait of author Katherine Mansfield. Katherine sat for it while she and Anne were staying in Cornwall in 1918.

My Substack on enigmatic American artist Anne Estelle Rice. Her one-time partner J.D. Fergusson painted this gorgeous portrait of Anne in 1910. It now hangs @perthartgallery. One of Anne’s standout paintings is being sold by @LyonandTurnbull this Thursday.
