The world is dark but today my daughter received the 8th Grade Award for Congeniality and Positivity. I’m finding it hard to channel that right now, but she’s beautiful and creative and cool and unbelievably smart so I must fine a grain of optimism.

For years, my pacifist family watched M*A*S*H in syndication at 7 pm every evening. Hot Lips showed me what a tough woman in a man’s world could be. Thank you, Loretta.

Hey social studies/history teachers: stay strong, teach what you know as good interpretation. It’s *patriotic* to tackle the hard stuff by encouraging students to analyze sources and understand the evidence.
