Some Northern Saw-whet Owls banded this fall.

My owl banding season starts tomorrow evening! I’m looking forward to seeing who (hoot) pays us a visit this year.

This recently fledged Barred Owl and parent are hanging in the cemetery beside where I live.

During MAPS banding yesterday, I was happy to see this older female Rufous Hummingbird with so much pollen on her throat & bill!

I’m currently in Thailand on the tiny island of Ko Man Nai, assisting Prof. Phil Round with his ringing study of migratory birds in the Gulf of Thailand. I’m so fortunate to be working with him & getting to see so many fascinating species!

Most species (37 of 45) have feathers and body parts that glow yellow or yellow-green under UV & bright blue light 🧪

I recently banded this adult male Cooper’s Hawk at WildArc, our local wildlife rehab. He had made a full recovery & was about to be released. Banding can help track the success of birds released from the centre. I have found a few around Victoria.

I was fortunate to see this very cute duck hybrid yesterday - Green-winged Teal x Mallard.

Lots of Varied Thrushes moving down from the hills during our snowy weather here in Victoria. Definitely one of my favourite birds!

Enjoying our winter sparrows: Lincoln’s, Oregon Junco, Golden-crowned, plus our out-of-town visitor, a Green-tailed Towhee.
