I feel for anyone at the front line of customer confrontation - er sorry, service. Anywhere you have to deal with actual people: 95% of the customers/patrons are fine. 3% are delightful and make your day. 2% undo the work of the 3% in an instant, and spoil your whole week.

It doesn't even matter what the altercation was about (well, it does to those involved, obviously; I understand that). It might be a baked-in customer service principle that the customer is always right - but once they abuse the staff, the principle is automatically deactivated.

All of that is true, of course. Yet with the black cloud of AI hanging over us and the incalculable power wielded by Big Tech I do wonder if it’s all been worth it.

I often think back to the pre-IT era. It feels like another world. Mostly, but definitely not entirely, a better one.
