“American colleges, especially the most selective ones, are confronting the dual problems of rampant grade inflation and declining rigor,” @rosehorowitch.bsky.social writes. “Teacher evaluations are a big part of how higher education got to this point.”

A note to applicants to PhD student positions. Do not write it with ChatGPT. We still read the applications ourselves and it takes about 30s to figure out if it's by ChatGPT.
Young people are using ChatGPT to write their applications; HR is using AI to read them; no one is getting hired. @annielowrey.bsky.social reports:

Many German universities have a so-called “civil clause” which forbids research benefiting the military. The author of the article arguing for an end of this practice is president of a Munich university.

Can these pockets take a 13” laptop?
talked to a store that said they decided to not pick up anything this fall/winter from norbit, a japanese brand that makes some of the coolest outerwear around. the reason: uncertainty around tariffs

The major problem with the pledge from #NATO countries to spend 5 percent of their GDP for defense spending is not that it is too ambitious.

Rather, the risk is that by 2035 it will be too late, I warn.

Coding is not enough. We need people who can build systems, that solve real life problems.
"The days of 'Learn to code' might be coming to an end," @rosehorowitch.bsky.social writes. "If the numbers are any indication, we might have passed peak computer science":

Artificial intelligence is ideally suited to replacing the very type of person who built it.

Yepp, totally normal. For the USSR.
The student paper at the college at which I teach reports a "tsunami of takedown requests" from international students terrified of being targeted for innocuous, legitimate op-eds & opinions.. Many ask in person--leave no trace in writing. Reminds me of my father's account of studying in the USSR.
