A friend, Jay Eberle, composed this in response to Trump's awful gutting of the U.S. refugee resettlement program. She and I care about Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest, a Phoenix agency that has welcomed and resettled refugees for 50-plus years and, for now, no longer can. Where is hope?

A jewel in the desert east of Palm Springs, The Living Desert Zoo/Gardens, is doing amazing work to conserve threatened/endangered species of animals and plants. My family and I had the privilege of visiting and interacting with one of its black rhinos, Jaali, a young male who loves lettuce.
