And solicitors getting probate would advertise for creditors /debtors, which might attract some public attention to the death and the will, I guess...?

Don't think they are/ were published as such, but if probate was granted you can get a copy of the will from the Probate registry for about a tenner. I think you just need a full name and date of death. Possibly also address or area where they lived
