There's a Stonehenge replica in the Columbia River Gorge that I expected to find silly, but it was actually wonderful. Railway magnate Sam Hill built it as a memorial to local men who died in WWI.
A replica of Stonehenge in Washington State, built on the cliffs above the Columbia River Gorge. The sky is blue, and you can see the blue river in the distance between the upright stones. It was a warm day, but it felt cool in the shade of the large concrete uprights. Sam Hill didn't have the builders copy the state of Stonehenge today, with fallen stones, but build it tidily, so there are no gaps.

Leverage and Grimm were both shot in Portland at around the same time, and I know people who were extras in the shows.

My husband is in this shot, but his face has been CGIed to be a bad guy's.

I found a lemon tree at the nursery this spring! It grew happily on the front porch, and I was looking forward to having the scent of lemon flowers indoors all winter!

Then I thought to check whether lemon trees are toxic to cats.

"Maybe he won't like it," I hoped.

When Dick Cheney died on Election day, it slipped by in the all the excellent hubhub. Here's a classic K Chronicles piece by Keith Knight that captures the Vice President perfectly.

The foliage and late flowers are a joy.
A tree with green leaves that are edged in bright gold. Agastache Blue Boa is the dark purple flower. Red leaves on the ground. Gold and orange foliage on a fothergilla bush. Finely cut Japanese maple leaves in vivid red. Japanese anemone flowers. They're rather small, single flowers shaped like a daisy. The center has a golden frill of stamens. The two flowers are surrounded by fallen leaves in vivid red and gold.

I love my neighborhood! Walked to the library to return a book, stopped in the shoe store to buy socks, chatted with the furry getting set up to busk, stopped at the grocery store, & strolled home admiring autumn foliage and late flowers. Ran into 2 people that I know, and had nice chats.
Me and a furry. He was setting up a Karaoke machine to busk. He's in geens and T-shirt with an orange and yellow fox-dog head. He has elbow length cozy orange and yellow gloves. A wall mural in shades of green with an abbreviation of the neighborhood name, Squirrel Hill. This table compares votes for Democrats for county-wide races on the front of the ballot, with the number of YES votes to retain PA Supreme Court Justices on the back of the ballot.

County Sheriff got the most votes, so I'm dividing by that.

We all turned it over, & 71% voted YES to retain!
A snippet of a spreadsheet comparing Democratic votes on the front of the ballot, to the back of the ballot. The county Sheriff's race got the highest Democratic vote on the front page. The Judicial Retention races on the 2nd page got at least 99.3% as many YES votes as the Democratic Sheriff candidate. One retention race got more YES votes than the Democratic sheriff did.

Ah, yes, not all the shrubs are disappointing!

Tree peonies

Viburnum carlesii
Red-twig dogwood shrub, with pale green leaves that are edged in white. The Latin name is cornus alba elegantissima, and it is, indeed, elegant. tree peony with dark lavender flowers. The flowers are big, many petaled extravaganzas. Viburnum x bodnatense 'Dawn' has a rather gawky shape, and my yard can use that vertical contrast. The early pink flowers are Meh, but I love the leaves. They have a heavy substance, a satiny surface, and a hint of red iridescence against the green. This photo is of my first viburnum carlesii, that was lovely, until it died. The roots had circled in the pot, and it was planted without the roots being slashed, and so as it grew, it gradually strangled itself. I planted a new one this fall. It's a deciduous shrub or small tree, with deliciously fragrant flowers in the spring. They are very pale pinkish white.

The two shrubs with dark foliage are behind some pink and lavender tree peonies. I toyed with the idea of azaleas, and decided that would be Too Much in April/May.

I ignored the old shrubs when I had lots of lilies -- but I gave up fighting the deer to keep the lilies going.
My front yard in the past. Retaining walls divide it into two levels, and both are stuffed full of lilies that are 4 to 6 feet tall. They're in full blooms, in shades of white, yellow and pink. If you want to run amuck, buy the lily _collections_ from White Flower Farm. You don't get named varieties, but buying in bulk makes each bulb quite cheap.

My front yard had The Most Disappointing Shrubs Ever, but I put off doing anything until we replaced the lead water line & the concrete steps. Finally done, and the new shrubs have been going in!

Still small, and nothing much this time of year, but a gardener can get excited about the future!
Fothergilla shrub. They're deciduous, with a graceful branching structure. They have silly little puffs of flowers in the spring, and dramatic autumn foliage in gold and red. This is a dwarf purple smokebush - Continus coggygria Velveteeny. It has this dramatic red autumn foliage. The summer foliage is purple, and there will be filmy plumes -- the "smoke" -- in the spring. Callicarpa Pearl Glam - American Beautyberry shrub. This also has a dark foliage, and then bright purple berries.

I glanced at the election results for @roseforacc.bsky.social's race, with the 3 letter abbreviations for Labor Party and Republican Party. That LAB conjured up something else!
