Anyway, I thought I knew Wordpress well enough but yesterday had a moment where I thought this stuff had gotten too complicated and felt like a total noob again. Until I found a good plug-in. So no overhaul needed. I'm also glad this learning happened on my own site and not a client's. End 🧵

This would break my brain? A new theme usually requires learning and reconfiguration of the entire Wordpress site, plug-ins just mean setting configurations for a new feature. Maybe I'm wrong and some themes make it worth it. I didn't hang around other WordPress web designers to actually know 🧵

This exercise was a trip down memory lane of the frustrations I had tweaking/building Wordpress sites to spec for old clients. When I no longer had the gigs (overcommitment) but revisited those sites for funzies, it would be to see some other designer change the theme just to have a new feature 🧵

The difference was so stark that I decided this was the last time and I suppose the theme will stay in this mode for good. But it meant if I wanted an image carousel on my site, it was Add Plug-In time. And apparently more expense time too 🧵

All this in a theme I paid for and have used for years, having a lifetime ownership and updates. Every time I've attempted the mode switch, same thing happened: site would break. I let an hour or two pass to see if this was a cache thing, forced refreshed, still zip. If I reverted, things OK again 🧵

Same. I just published a piece on the inadequacy of AI "therapy" and now this?

I don't even collect very seriously but I'm afraid to count how many Oracle and Tarot decks I have...

"Finish"? Lol. I have a notebook of ongoing projects. They're still too many but they're now organised by category/page! :)

It doesn't stop new projects but it does mean old ones get returned to when I'm bored.
