Jewish families told me they will leave Scotland unless these issues are addressed. If they do, schools with a single Jewish pupil today will soon have none.

Efforts by Jewish groups to engage with EIS have been rebuffed. Jewish teachers exited the union after October 7, EIS has refused to meet with the Board of Deputies and continues to recommend the controversial resources.

The EIS teaching union has promoted material juxtaposing images of Palestinian suffering with idyllic Israeli life, framing Israeli children as privileged and Palestinian children as victims of military aggression.

Meanwhile teaching resources endorsed by some Scottish local authorities describe Israel as a “settler colonial regime” engaging in “genocide.” One booklet claims antisemitism is a purely “European phenomenon.”

Pupils report being called “dirty Jews,” physically attacked in the playground and having swastikas drawn on their belongings. Some parents have told their children not to play with Jewish classmates, according to Jewish parents, who all said their child is the only Jew in the school.
