Just finished reading Becky Chambers’ gorgeously titled To Be Taught if Fortunate. Wonderful solar punk sci fi, beautifully written and inclusive. Interesting exploration of community funded space travel. Wished it was longer - too short to really do justice to either the topic or the characters.

Just finished The History of the World in 47 Borders by John Elledge and really enjoyed it. I also learnt a huge amount about the Holy Roman Empire.

Just finished reading Butter by Asako Yuzuki and have lots of feelings. Mainly hunger! But more seriously the importance of learning to care for yourself and what being cared for means to you, to both enable others to care for you and you to take care of others. Would recommend rice and butter!

What fresh hell is this...???? What on earth does "Paste with Copilot" even mean!? They've stopped CTRL+V from working properly in Word in order to pretend it's some amazing new Gen AI Feature, rather than something that's probably been possible for longer than I've been alive!!

I’ve just finished David Nicholls’ You Are Here and it was a lovely read. It doesn’t quite have the page turning suspense of One Day but like with most of his work, you do start seeing the characters as friends and wondering what they’re up to. I love anything to do with the coast to coast walk too.

Great to be at the #LibrariesChangeLives event yesterday with @cilip.bsky.social London talking to MPs and Peers about the importance of libraries to the social fabric of the UK. Also lots of discussion about OA and the problems with the current scholarly publishing ecosystem.

Date yourself with a shop that doesn’t exist any more

My first job was at Bacons Shoes. It was very much a “pile ‘em high and sell ‘em cheap” kinda place. We used to security tag one shoe in each pair and there was a LOT of theft of the other shoe. Ditto on the harassment unfortunately.

Today has been one of the hardest days as we said goodbye to a truly special and unique woman. But it has given me a timely reminder that what I have in life, is very special. And what’s more, it’s been built with love and care from the ground up, at times against the odds and against expectations.
